This product seems to work well for helping to seal pipe threads. A little messy so maybe gloves.

This amount is probably more than you'll need in your lifetime
DOPE is what my local gas company calls it (and they swear by it) applied properly over the threads you should have no problems sealing the gas pipe from leaks.
