Magellan SporTrak Map Waterproof Hiking GPS

I have had this unit for a month and am amazed by the satellite sensitivity. I can pick up 2-3 in my house no where near a window. As the owner of three previous GPS units for use with a laptop, I can tell you that this one has replaced them all. It works by itself of course, and with so much information it provides, it does take a Masters degree to really know how to use all the features. The ONLY disappoint was with the built in map... mine only shows the US and major cities, but even zooming in all the way with highest detail, there are no highways or anything else. I purchased an older version of Map Send from the web for $18 and that has made all the difference... now I actually have roads and the GPS follows them perfectly. I have driven with the unit, taken it on walks and on bike rides and I can say that it is a great value for the price. I do think that the latest MapSend software should be bundled with it, however. I love maps and I love GPS and this is a great combo in a small package. By the way, the screen in full sunlight is super... no problem at all in the harshest sunlight or the heaviest overcast or tree cover. I am amazed by the sensitivity of the receiver!UPDATE...I called Thanes, the maker, and they informed me that I had gotten a unit with an EU base map. To make a long story short, they replaced the base map and returned it within a week... and included batteries and a carry case. This company, unlike so many these days, gets four thumbs up from me! Outstanding product, outstanding support, great price.

The only problem with this item was the cable. The computer end did not fit my Dell laptop or desktop. I ordered from another provider a cable with a USB computer jack that works, but was $25 additional cost.

The seller did not mention that this device was missing the battery pack and charger so it was a real was of time and money. The price of the battery alone was more than the price I paid for the GPS. So I could have purchased a new one and been done with it. Total was of time and money

I bought this in April 2019, and it quit working in March 2020. It was replacing one of the same make and model that had lasted 9 years.From the start, the battery compartment would not stay shut without a piece of duct tape securing it. But the price was entirely reasonable; unlike other sellers.However, last month it simply stopped working, even when new batteries were installed. Once again, I have no way to retrieve coordinates stored within it and nowhere else. I am disappointed, but cannot afford anything else- so I give it three stars... just be sure to keep the coordinates written somewhere in a notebook.

The unit itself works well, however beaware that deet will melt your unit, both the screen and the case. Also after about one year of use my SportTrac had a catastrophic software failure in the field. Apparently, the unit must have a map loaded to work as a GPS unit and my map apparently suddenly became corrupted. Currently, I am unable to load any new maps or perform a software upgrade... making my unit a paper weight. I do not know if Garmin suffers similar issues, but frankly as a life safety equipment this is not acceptable. Lastly, I found Magellan's customer service to be totally crappy...for example the customer service rep saying essentially obviously putting a chemical like gasoline on your unit voids its warranty... my response was DEET is approved to put on ones skin... I did not put gasoline on the unit... Magellan pretty much said to bad... so I would not recommend this unit.

I researched many different handheld GPS units through many different resources before purchasing the Magellan SporTrak Map. I have now been using for almost 3 months now, and I am very happy with my decision. I choose this unit because I wanted to be able to get the best reception in wooded areas, have accurate readings, be able to program a lot of my own locations with comments, and have pre-installed maps so that it would be easy to see where I am in referece to highways & cities. I got all this with this unit without spending a lot of money. I have used this unit primarily for Geocashing though I have used while driving at times. I have not purchased any additional maps - I only have the base map that comes with it. I have read the reviews where some are disappointed with the Magellan maps. I have found the included map pretty good. Usually you might be off the road a few yards, but I have found that the maps are accurate in seeing how far you are to a particular city or highway. My only wish is that the batteries would work a little longer - but the Magellan will let you know with pretty good accuracy how much battery power that you have left and gives you plenty of warning before running out of power. I highly recommend.

Units good, just wish it would of had accessories.

The GPS will turn on and does not acquire more than one satellite, therefore it can not give a position or anything else.
