Review Dreamweaver 4 Weekend Crash Course is aimed at beginners who want to learn Macromedia's highly rated Web design tool as fast as possible. Those who do not have a free weekend any time soon need not worry: the "crash course" concept is little more than a way to organise chapters into sections. What you get is a common-sense guide to Dreamweaver, chatty in tone, and complete with summaries and self-test questions at the end of each chapter. A bundled CD contains all the examples from the book. The first part covers the basics, including a discussion about hand-coded HTML code versus visual layout with Dreamweaver. There is a tour of Dreamweaver's site and document windows, and a chapter on creating a simple Web page. The next part explains site management, showing how to define a Web site and upload it to a remote server. There are also two chapters on using tables for page layout. Part Three delves into detailed page design, introducing the HTML editor, hyperlinks, JavaScript effects, and forms. The next part steps back to look at site navigation , tools for team working, and using site templates and library items. Graphics, style sheets and multimedia are the core subjects in Part Four, while the final part tackles the complexities of using layers, Dynamic HTML, and frames for more advanced layout. The author does not pretend to teach HTML itself. The book is also thin on the subject of Web graphics, and in general the illustrations are barely adequate. On the plus side, there is a strong focus on the whole Web site, rather than page layout alone, and there are plenty of excellent real-world tips. Readers will find it a friendly, good-value introduction to Dreamweaver. --Tim Anderson Synopsis 30 step-by-step lessons that will have readers creating a cool Dreamweaver site in the course of a weekend!
