A Great Starter Video Cam With A Rare Must Have Feature
Being new to the video cam life but with ambitions for doing some serious work, I was looking for an entry level camera that I could learn and practice technique on before springing for a long term, expensive work horse. After logging a few hours of looking around, I was an easy sell for the Play Touch because it was the only one in its class featuring an external mike jack. I so hate having to endure clips with wretched sound quality and I don't want to foist such on my own audiences. Built in mikes with their echo chambers and wind tunnels will do just that, however, so I can't understand why other manufacturers haven't caught on. Having a standard tripod socket was also a big upside for me. Shaky footage is another easily corrected shortcoming that I see holding back some otherwise really interesting movies out there. After practicing for a few weeks, here's the bottom line(s) from me: (1) As long as it is used within it's limitations the camera performs surprisingly well for being in the hundred dollar range. (isn't that always the key to getting the most from your camera, i.e., working from within it's limitations?) Touch screens can be a beautiful thing and this one scores big points with me. Sure the sweet picture quality takes a nose dive in low light situations and you have to recharge more often than we would prefer but let's face it--when you go for the cheap seats you will always have to give up some of your druthers. (2) The Kodak Play Touch Zi10 wonderfully suits my purposes as stated above and I highly recommend it for those of you who want to get in on the fun without strangling your pocketbook.

Step up from Kodak Zi8
It's worth the upgrade. I own 2 Zi8s, a Flip HD, and now a Zi10. Here's whats better than the Zi8: - Much smaller and lighter, I'm really surprised this has been a bigger focus on the reviews here on Amazon. If you want to carry this thing in your pocket, the smaller size and lighter weight is very noticable in comparison to Zi8. - Picture quality. It's just as good if not better. Low light capabilities seem slightly better to me but I haven't done any technical comparision, this is just anecdotal at this point. - Ease of use. Touch screen takes a little getting used to but it's fine, I didn't have problems adjusting to it and it seems the new Firmware has fixes the sliggishness that early reviewers were complaining about. - Lack of USB popout. This doesn't bother me at all because I always have one with my laptop because there are so many devices these days that use the micro-usb cable including my cell phone. - Price. Again another biggie. It's so much cheaper than the Zi8 which still sells on Ebay for $130+ when the Zi10 is selling new here on Amazon for just over half that price. I don't get why anyone is even still considering buying the Zi8 when this better version is out. Conclusion: If you're choosing, the Zi10 is a no brainer. If you already have a Zi8, I think you should upgrade if the smaller size and compact weight makes a difference to you.

For the price this video camera is good. The video resolution is good. I have read lots of negative reviews about this video camera and this thing is way better than the reviews. Yes there are better video cameras out there...but for less than $100 on Amazon what you would be hard pressed to find anything out there that compares. Especially considering that there is an external microphone jack...which means if you want to record a concert or your a live performance you can hook up a condenser or dynamic microphone to this...which is a feature only found in high priced video cameras...$400 and up. I do hear a little hiss in the audio feed when recording with an external mic...but maybe I need to experiment with other mics...not sure yet. The touch screen in prelnty fast. I had to learn how to take good video with this baby. You want to move the camera slowly when taking video shots and you want to be standing still fro the most part. Since the image stability is not that great if you walk around while filming the video looks shakey...but if you are not walking around the video looks great. This was nice to have on our last vacation without having to lug around a big camcorder. This was much more convenient and did the job. The photos that we took also came out decent for a 5MP camera. Not as good as our 18MP SLR...but good. You have to make sure you get the right video memory card with fast minutes per second. I get at least an hour of video time between charges...and I think about four hours of video with the largest memory card...I think... Also, the body is strong...does not feel like a cheap toy. The previous model zi8 was at least $200...so this is half the price. Some people say the video quality is not comparable to the previous model...but it is good enough and clear enough for what I use it for...actually is very clear...
