a good sampling of the 60's in the arts
I think this reader provides us with a good sampling of 60's literature and poetry. It also provides a timeline with major events that took place during each year of that famous decade. It's no wonder that the general populace thought that the world was literally coming apart. Those years were a time of tremendous upheaval, with a younger generation taking a stand against the mores and traditions of the previous generations to liberate and educate. It is no surprise then that the poetry, literature and the visual arts were so full of question, anger and mistrust of the established societal norms. The arts flourished and blossomed during this time, much of it to be an eternal stamp of recognition for the decade.I highly recommend this reader to those who want to know more about the generation that reshaped western society. This sampling of literature gives a broad, yet concise view of what it meant to live through those years in the United States, and how many of the freedoms we take for granted were put to the test then, to hold water now.

Valuable Teaching Book
This is an excellent resource for a period of history that brought great accomplishments--the Civil Rights Acts, Second Wave Feminism and an end to the Vietnam War. I teach students who don't know how much blood was shed for things they now take for granted. The Sixties are often cast as a period of decadence and squalor, especially in an age of right wing revisionism. This book is an antidote. Note to Penguin: this book is poorly bound and begins to fall apart fairly quickly. It deserves better binding and production.

... on the history of the Sixties and I am glad I did
This book was bought for a class I was taking on the history of the Sixties and I am glad I did. There are so many good original sources and writings from the time period it was a very valuable resource to have for the course. The book is an anthology of writings from the best writers and the political and social figures of the day. From speeches to articles to poems it can be found in this book, and it covers the different periods and movements extremely well. It helps you put yourself back into that time period in your mind and makes you understand what was really happening during the sixties.

1960s
This makes a good supplementary reading on issues of the 1960s but shouldn’t be used alone.

Came on time!
The typical wear and tear of a 4x used book so it's in a bit of a rough shape, but hey, I'm not complaining as long as all the pages are still there I'm happy! :D Thanks for the speedy delivery!

A 60's Taster
The greater diversity displayed here prevents this from being as coherent as the editor's "Beat Reader", but it still has many virtues, and would be worth the money even if it only had William S. Burroughs' bizarrely hilarious take on the infamous Chicago '68 Democratic Convention, "The Coming of the Purple Better One"!

An excellent access route to a fascinating period of change and contradictions.
Excellent choice of fundamental readings about the period. I think that selection was as fair and accurate as any collection of readings can be.
