Comfort Food from Days of Yore
When I was in middle school in San Francisco in 1985, this was the BEST snack after school! My best friend and I would get at least 1 pack each every single day at the corner liquor store in the Inner Richmond by the park, and it's one of my best memories from that time. I looked for it for literal decades, and stumbled across it here in Amazon purely by accident. It's exactly as I remember it, although it took a few packs for me to really get all the way back to how it tasted when I was 13. I deducted 1 star because I honestly don't think most people will like this a lot, but this could turn into a very expensive habit for me all these years later, I really do love it a lot! There is a faint fishy smell and at times aftertaste that is very normal for this sort of Chinese treat, and that alone may be enough to turn off a lot of people unfamiliar with real Chinese snacks. It is VERY faint, and my husband did not detect this at all, only me. It is VERY dry and tough--not tender or moist as many popular American jerkys are these days. It does look hairy, and that really bothers a lot of people! The "fur" is the most benign, innocent thing in the world! The cured meat is covered with wheat and soy flours that hold the heavy but perfect combination of seasonings. If you want umami, this is it at its finest! I prefer the regular "hot" myself, so expect the most noticeable flavors to be sugar, soy sauce, and dry red chili pepper.I absolutely LOVE this stuff. It won't be for everyone, but if you like spicy food or long for umami snack selections this is a gem! The product has been around for nearly 40 years that I know of, possibly longer, so obviously they're doing something right for those of us who have been loving it for generations. I hope they restock!

Favorite from my childhood
The meat is more dry than I remember. The flavor has not changed since I started eating it several decades ago. I would buy it again.

I think it's supposed to be fuzzy
I bought a bag of "original flavored" beef jerky despite the fact that the product was covered in fuzz, or fur, or hair, or whatever it is. It was inexpensive, and I was brave. But when I looked at the bag again at home, I lost all courage to try it. I was convinced that it was mold or something. I wasn't sure what it was but something was wrong with it, I thought.According to the company's website, these are "loose meaty fibers that act like flavor conductors. Trust us." I wanted to trust them, probably because I'd already spent money on it. But I didn't want to get sick or die from beef jerky. That would make for a terrible obituary.I searched the internet for a while, hoping to find something to corroborate their story, but found nothing. So I worked up my courage again and decided to trust them.I opened the bag and smelled it. It smelled fine. I tried a tiny piece at first. It didn't taste weird at all. Then I tried a bigger piece. Then I stared at the bag for awhile, waiting to see if I was going to die.I haven't died yet but if I do, tell my ex-wife that I blame her.
