Two sons or the family continuum
This could be the alternative title or a working title for this excellent book from Chris Anderson. Through his extensive experience in conflict zones and documentary photography this great photographer takes up some existential themes with great sensitivity and humanism. A tribute to life and his father I believe.

Beautiful pictures, printed too small
Bah, humbug.I've loved the work of Christopher Anderson ever since I discovered it on the Magnum website. SON is Anderson's reflection both on becoming a new father and on his own father's illness. The colour photographs are sensitive and beautifully composed. The reproduction is excellent, with crisp contrast and deep, rich colour. The one fly in the ointment is the rather odd book design. All but one of the photographs in the book are in landscape format, yet the book (which is not large, 8x10") is portrait format, and worse, the photos are printed with wide margins so they're only 6x4". I suppose the effect might be intended to simulate a family album, but the when the one portrait image fills the page it feels like, "at last! I can SEE!" Publishing in landscape format would let the whole project be seen at a scale where you could make out details that are naggingly below the threshold of visibility in the actual edition. I have to say, I do still prefer this approach to the one of printing landscape images across double page spreads so significant details vanish into the binding, so bonus points for that, but still. This is a beautifully produced book, and I'm glad I've had the opportunity to give Mr. Anderson some of my money. But whoever designed this book needs to remember that, in an age when images on websites can be viewed on tablets with the same ease as reading a book, size and ability to resolve detail are two advantages that photo books stil carry. This book doesn't really deliver on either of those counts.

Lavoro Originale
