BMW 5-Series 6-Cyl Petrol: 96-03

If you have a little mechanical ability and are patient you can use this manual to do many repairs on your BMW E39.

The book was very comprehensive including the electrical wiring diagrams. The shipping was slow since the book came from the UK. I'm not sure that I noticed that fact on the offer page.

I've been wrenching on cars for over 30 years - and i have a book for every car i've ever owned - I always add them to the library. This one is going to get burned in the fire pit as soon as I get the Bentley version. Bad and sparse illustrations, horrible key index. On the first repair i referenced it for, it simply said "this is complex and should only be performed by an authorized BMW Dealership". ARE YOU JOKING ME? Why would i buy a servcie manual, if I was going to just take it to the freaking DEALER? The instructions are incomplete, and mostly gibberish.Save yourself, friend. grit your teeth, buy the expensive manual, and count yourself lucky you didn't kill a tree, and half a paycheck on this pile of soon to be kindling wood.

Once again, Haynes comes through with a very useful book. While not as detailed or comprehensive as some more expensive manuals, it does a great job covering most issues at a very reasonable price. It was nice to discover upon delivery that it is hard-cover. Hurrah, Haynes.

Very precise and explanatory. Arrived as expected. I've had a few of their manuals and knew it would be what I needed to help me fix the things I can on my car without an expensive repair bill.

Very Condensed version in comparison to the other service manual I have. I like the pictures and the step-by-step instructions. It's made more for amateur mechanics rather than "scholar" mechanics. It's always good to have a second service manual as a backup.

Very useful - fairly easy and detailed manual... would recommend having a Chilton's or other shop manual to go along with it

Considering this is one of the most popular BMW models Haynes seemed to have put so little effort into the production of this manual. Compared with other manuals I've owned this is poorly illustrated. The pictures are black and while low resolution and dimly light. It's difficult to figure which orientation or direction many pictures are taken from. It really needs a section on error messages and diagnostics. Overall engine diagrams would really help place the main items. Better key component diagrams and assembly diagrams required. I'll maybe try another manual company next time.
