Interesting read about one scientist's career
Interesting read. Nice writing. She mostly talks about her career, including Tektite II, Jim, bubble subs, the Persian Gulf, and other stuff. It includes selected references and an index but no illustrations. I took a star away for the boring ocean politics talk and the number of weird mistakes she made involving cetaceans. They included the following: she said the scientific name of spotted dolphins is Stenella longirostris, which is in fact the name for spinner dolphins (it's S. frontalis for Atlantic spotted dolphins and S. attenuata for pantropical spotted dolphins); claimed that cetaceans evolved 65 million years ago (try 50); and believed Bryde's whales get bigger than humpbacks (she meant sei whales, which only get longer than humpbacks but don't weigh much). She also said Cousteau's Conshelf One was in the Red Sea at a depth of 400 feet and used Starfish House as an underwater habitat. It was actually in the Mediterranean, at a depth of only 33 ft, and used Diogenes as its underwater habitat. Starfish House was used in the Red Sea, but at the same depth of 33 ft and for Conshelf II. You'd think she would've checked that? Strange. Oh, and she said the black marlin is in the genus Xiphias, which is really the genus for swordfish. I guess no one fact checks anymore.

A gripping adventure story of undersea exploration and urgent plea for preservation of the oceans.
This book is a three part narrative describing Sylvia Earle's decades of undersea exploration, and urgent plea for the preservation of the world's fragile and rapidly deteriorating ocean ecosystems. I read this book for my AP Environmental Science class, and I found it to be incredibly remarkable and inspiring. Sylvia herself is a well respected oceanography, scuba diver, and research scientist. She also founded Mission Blue, an organization dedicated to protecting the ocean. And has gone on countless adventures of the oceans. The topics she discusses have severely impacted our environment and only continue to get worse. Her message strives people to do what they can, whether as an individual or as a group to protect and restore the oceans and its life while they still exist. It is a valid message that needs to be heard. People's ignorance is a destructive force that will only continue to grow for the environment. That being said I recommend this book to anybody interested in reading about the perils facing our oceans, but also the majestic undersea adventures told by Earle. At times the book may seem boring, but if you push through it gets better and it completes the overall message. If you love the ocean and its life, read this book. We must protect the oceans, each of us matters, and this book is a start to it all.

Excellent! Buy! Read! Spread the work!
Everyone should read this. This lady is truly inspiring (although her backstory isn't in this book), and anything she has to say on the oceans should be heeded. It's a very easy to read, simple enough book on complex issues that will blow your mind if you have never thought about them.Try to read past the descriptive "I was walking along the sand blah blah" moments because once you hit the actual information you won't be able to stop reading. You will also won't be able to stop talking to people about the book and all the things you learnt. It just makes you want to enlighten the rest of the world...I was a dive instructor in Australia when I first read it no just had to buy a few copies to keep on the boat's 'library' for all to read.
