Most important book in recent history regarding race relations
The Hate U Give is a powerfully important story about a young girl, sixteen year old Starr, starting with her being witness to an unthinkable tragedy and branching off into how everyone in her family and community are affected by what's happened.Starr straddles the line between residing in the "ghetto" and what it means to be black in an impoverished community, and the all white private school she attends, being careful to enunciate her words and never being the "ghetto black girl" among her friends. Even before the tragedy, she is weary of the constant vigilance it takes to not intermingle the two worlds. After the tragedy, it becomes all but impossible. This story gives a glimpse into a world most of us will never understand. Is the closest you can get to "walking a mile in some one else's shoes". There were many times reading it that I felt uncomfortable in my privilege. I've never had to prepare my son for how to interact with a police officer. In fact, when they were younger, I raised them that if lost, go to the nearest police officer for assistance. That trust is non existent in the neighborhood. While most kids getting "the talk" means the "birds and bees", for Starr the talk meant how to interact with police at all times, how to keep your hands visible, how to comply. In Starr's neighborhood, gun shots are background music to sleep by. Something my kids or I would never understand. There's real character growth in this book. From Maverick's approach to his daughter's white boyfriend and moving out of the neighborhood, to Starr finding her voice and learning what it means to be brave. As her mom said, "You can do everything right and things may still go wrong. The key is to never stop doing right."It's been said by most every reviewer but this book is such an important story to tell, and the author gets everything in it right. Too many unarmed black boys are killed by scared police officers. Stand Your Ground laws often protect the shooter. This book is about changing the narrative, starting with the media and trickling down to the court room. If he's unarmed, does it really matter if he has been known to smoke weed, sell drugs, or associate with gang members? Why does the focus come off the "unarmed " fact?I may never understand how in one breath a person can talk about the white privilege keeping them poor and uneducated while in the next they're burning down business and looting stores in their own neighborhood, but that's this is why so many advocates like Starr are needed to step up and educate, and why people like Chris are needed to show up and support. The messages of Malcolm X and Tupac come off a little preachy, but it's a message for all mankind, a manifesto to breaking the cycle that we still haven't learned. Until we do, this book is necessary and should be required reading in every high school.

Who are you going to be? Your own genuine self from the ground-up, or Society's expectations of what you should be? Society don't know the WHOLE you anyways!
