Page-for-page the best sailing book I've ever read!! I won't restate what others have said. However, I will add that this book would also be helpful for sailors not singlehanding their boats, too.His style is refreshing; let's face it, anyone who can make sleep an interesting subject is damn good!!Not only do I strongly recommend the book, I also thank the author for putting it out there. Sailors who read this book, I think, will enjoy their boats more and, I suspect, this book will be responsible for saving many readers from injury or worse! A must read!! I'm pleased to be plying some of the same waters as the author & hope our paths will cross some day so I can thank him personally for such a vsluable contribution to sailing literature!

If you are interested in long distance single-handed cruising this book will be useful
I bought this book not because I was planning to sail singlehandledly most of the time but because thought that some of the techniques might be applicable to the the type of sailing I normally do which is predominately just my wife and myself and daysailing and/or short cruises. Unfortunately this book is really dedicated to people who want to do long distance solo cruising. And while some of the material was interesting, it is of little value to anyone who does not fall into this category.

Many well thought out techniques
This book is about offshore singlehanded RACING, and as such is written with a view to efficiently and agressively winning races. That being said, the book contains many thoughts on ways to improve singlehanding a sailboat no matter the reason one does it. The author also explains WHY he thinks the way he does, so it is left to the reader to evaluate, and possibly improve, on a technique. I learned many tips that I will be trying out on my next sail.

excellent
I came to this book from perhaps a different perspective- I am an experienced sailor but have never singlehanded unless you count sailing a laser! I took much of value from this book- both a sense for the realities of distance single handing as I consider if I would ever do it myself and also a range of practical advice that is of value to my fully crewed sailing. All in a book that is enjoyable and written in a manner that doesn't make you feel as if the author takes himself too seriously. Highly recommend

Valuable even for cruisers
It’s true, the author’s focus is on racing. However, he does spend a significant portion of the book discussing… sailing. Therefore I don’t think the title is at all misleading.Furthermore, the author covers much common ground, including: psychology and sleep issues; boat setup for single-handing; sail trim & balance; self steering; power generation & budget; things breaking; things going wrong; storm tactics; seeing and being seen; health & self care; trash management; and more.Though I’m a cruiser, I found value even in the areas that emphasize racing. First, in that it prompted me to think about my own setup and situation, and come to intentional conclusions about what’s most appropriate for me and my vessel. Second, just for the sheer learning of things I hadn’t considered. I may never self steer using a storm sail, but who knows, it could come in handy one day! It’s fascinating just to know it’s a possible option. For me, the section on heaving-to alone was worth the price of the book. Although already familiar (and have practiced), his techniques for trimming and tweaking while hove-to are invaluable. I will be trying these out at the next opportunity.Don’t do yourself a disservice by assuming this book won’t apply or have any value for your particular single-handing situation.

Revised
I gave a poor rating initially because I wrongly felt the basics overly stressed. Upon re-reading at a more leisurely pace, I found myself discovering better understanding of much that I felt I knew while seeing some other viewpoints in a more appreciative manner. My apologies for my earlier haste and my thanks for allowing me to glimpse a shift into a wider paradigm.

Worth reading. Covers about everything from food and forestays to halyards and halluzinaions, from solitude to racing.. Very deep lecture!

Not for the faint of heart, I’ll say. But, I’m getting better!
“A lifetimes worth of experience and the best part is that it has to be honest and you know that it is”.Every detail in this well thought out book is worth paying close attention to. Even just changing a few things about the way I sail, the insights are so worthwhile.
