Ian Rice Layouts
I have always enjoyed reading and studying Ian Rice layout books. Being that he lives in Great Britain, he is use to designing layouts in a confined area , without it looking like a bowl of spaghetti. His layouts are designed to have at least one track that goes all the way around ( for those that like to watch a train go around in circles) and have tracks for switching. Most of the layouts are designed to fit into most any room in your house or garage. With some of your own work , you can make it take over any basement. ( but if you are like me , living in Southeast Texas , we don't have basements . )This is a good book to start with , and if you are like me , you will buy all his books .

Good Resource For Layout Design and Construction
This book is well written. The author gives many ideas on how to best construct a shelf layout for a model railroad. He presents both the strengths and weaknesses of said construction and shares a wealth of ideas.

Model Railroading is FUN!
When you order a book called "Shelf Layouts for Model Railroads" then you know what it's subject is . . .No doubts there! What you see in this book is strong theory, good graphics and an educational tone. Very professional. And I would buy it again, if only for the clear instructions/drawings.What I miss is Passion with a big P. The Fun of Failing. Of being creative and finding your own way of doing things. What I look for in books about my h0bby is: new ideas, admiration for someone else's creativity and most and for all the suppressed urge to drop the book and work on my own layout.(Which, to be honest, is not nearly as beautiful as the ones Iain Rice introduces in his book ;o))Long live differentiation.

I also like the manner in which Mr
I believe this modest volume is a 'must read' for a model railroader as it covers a variety of prototypes and fully develops the virtues of a shelf layout. I started building a rather large shelf layout (single deck, 250' main line) five years ago, and this book has been extremely valuable at many levels - prototype influence, conceptual design, construction, and operation. I also like the manner in which Mr. Rice illustrates his work. I purchased a few more copies recently to have at the ready as gifts for friends who are contemplating building or re-building a layout. Too basic for most model railroaders, except, perhaps, those brand new to the hobby
Mediocre book @ an inflated price - typical of Kalmbach Publishing. A rehash of older magazine articles, and lacks real substance. The material in this book could have been handled in a single chapter in another book. Quite disappointing, overall.

A good choice
I bought this because I have wanted to build a model railroad but have little space available, so I have decided to build a double track around my living room, this book gave a lot of good ideas and also pointed out a lot of restrictions to the plan I wanted to do before, I got myself stuck. recommend!

A good book
I purchased this book because I own other books on this subject by this author. They are very well written containing much useful information on designing a modelrailroad . this book contains many great ideas on how to design a layout which will fit a shelf. It helped me quite a bit with the layout which I was building.

Qualche esempio di shelf layout in stile USA
pensavo meglio. Pochi esempi di plastici a mensola. Poche foto. In ogni caso per chi ha poco spazio, come me, per fare un plastico, ritengo che una ventina di € possano essere investiti per una lettura che può dare qualche spunto, per idearsi qualche soluzione costruttiva....

Shelf layouts offer many opportunities for limited spaces
Some people think of a shelf layout as an 8 to 10 inch narrow piece of wood attached to whatever length of a blank wall that is available which means mostly switching layouts. In this book Iain Rice shows that much more is possible. In fact calling them "shelf layouts" is not an accurate description of most of the layouts in this book. After discussing the problems. possibilities, practicalities and the planning aspects of a shelf layout the plans for nine complete layouts are presented in detail along with building, landscape and operation of the layout are discussed. This is a useful book not only for layouts that will be ;limited to shelf situations but also to other small layout designs..
