Is there a filter unit inside of that removeable cap, or is the filter just the screen itself that's on the cap?

No separate filter but the way it's designed looks like you'd have no trouble trapping hair etc and cleaning it out.

I've had mine since Sept last year. I have used Conair dryers for years. Each has lasted several years. It's the brand I prefer.

How long is the cord?

Not long enough! I have to saty close to wall in order to have the plug not fall out of the socket. It's longer than a ft.
