I love Studs Terkel.
I was not familiar with many of the performers interviewed in this book, but Studs Terkel made each one interesting. Some aspect of each performers story stood out to me. A good read.

More great oral history from Studs Terkel
Nice collection of parts of interviews of some greats from the opera and jaz worlds. Better than the original interviews in one respect -- the subjects get to talk more than the interviewer. I loved Stud's show on WFMT, but sometimes...

The music will stay in your head
It took me awhile to get into this book because the first section consisted of interviews with classical artists and those from the opera. Sadly my musical knowledge in those areas is lacking.Once I reached the musicians I was familiar with, the book was a gift! Songs played in my head as they were mentioned and their synthesis described. Many of the artists have since passed away, so it was wonderful to remember them and learn more about them in their own words. The ones that really resonated with me were interviews with Alan Lomax,Pete Seeger,Bob Dylan, Mahalia Jackson, Ravi Shankar, Lil Armstrong, and Leonard Bernstein.Studs Terkel was a master at allowing people the space to speak their mind and lay out who they are and what is important to them. His interviews form a legacy that is gift to us all.

A marvelous Book
This book is wonderful and so full of character. Anyone old enough to remember Studs Terkel and His radio program will love this book, and if you have never heard of him you will enjoy getting to know his unique outlook on life. The interviews are a rich and colorful history of the music of the 20th century and well worth the price of admission.

Studs Terkel...
Studs Terkel is a great writer/interviewer. He knows that the best stories don't come from the higher-ups in the country but from everyday working class people. I highly recommend this book.

Very difficult reading
This is a book of interviews and quotes from an eclectic DJ. While all the A list entertainers are here including Marian Anderson, Louis Armstrong, Mahalia Jackson, Bob Dylan, Janis Jopin and more this book is not interwoven with any coherence and too abstract. Since everyone will like at least someone quoted here it will have its fans, but I am having a horrible time getting through this book.
