Dragonbreath #5: No Such Thing as Ghosts

Our 8 yr old son LOVED the Dragon Breath series because they make him "Laugh his head off!". He has read every book in the series, a few of them in a day. When asked why he likes these books he said "Because they have good characters, are funny, adventurous, and the story lines are crazy - crazy AWESOME!". All of theses things make this book and the others in the series incredibly interesting to a kiddo who enjoys funny adventures. As a parent I appreciate that they are funny without being totally stupid and that they are easy to read without being "dumbed down". I would say the reading level is higher than Big Nate but not as high as say Harry Potter. These are great transition books for readers who need a bit more of a challenge. However they are also great for more advanced readers who just want to read a great story about an amazing adventure. Overall a great series and I would highly recommend for the 8-9 yr old set.

My 7&9 year old boys loooove this series. We’ve bought every single one and they giggle throughout. It’s made nightly reading so much easier because they really look forward to it. My 7 year old is an advanced reader. 3rd-4th grade is a good level for this book.

We're working through the Dragonbreath books with my 6 and 8 year olds, and they're just fantastic, so much better than most books for that age range. If you haven't read much Ursula Vernon, she's beyond amazing. However, this one is a little bit scary. We had to finish the book (of course everything turns out okay) instead of going to bed partway through. If your reader is on the younger side or especially sensitive to that, you might want to hold off on this particular entry. It's a really good book--it's just got more of a horror twist than the ones that come before it.

Getting boys to read can be difficult but this series has captured my kids - boys and girls alike - and Dragonbreath #5 lives up to the series reputation of being a good read. It also has a big attraction for reluctant readers. My students fight over who gets the next book in the series first but my own sons won't let anyone read them until they have finished them. I love watching kids get excited over books and this series has helped spark an interest in my kids.

I bought these as a gift for my 10 year old nephew and he loved it!

My nephew got this for Christmas he loves the series so much he reads the books over and over I'm so greatful authors are making books that interests kids and encourages them to read!

I loved the book it had a great plot line and a good mystery behind the book even though it was in the fantasy genre and the character personalities went great with the animal the creators gave the main character and even the side characters

Reason for Reading: Next in the series. Once a kids' series like this has reached a certain number of books, it always follows through with an obligatory Hallowe'en story and this is Dragonbreath's Hallowe'en entry. Breaking form from the other books where they usually travel to meet with one of Danny's relatives to help them with the situation in which they find themselves, this time Danny, Wendell and classmate Christiana go trick or treating and end up with a real ghost on their hands. Lots of fun! Wendell meets his match with an even geekier kid than himself in Christiana. While Wendell's costume is an hydrogen atom, Christiana's is a salmonella bacteria and Christiana talks science using words even Wendell has to look up in a dictionary. But Christiana has a weakness, her scientific mind leads her to being a skeptic about anything unproven, even the fact that Danny is a dragon! So ultimately it is Christiana who has the hardest time facing a real ghost. An enjoyable book, full of everything we've come to expect from Danny Dragonbreath, with a nice combination of text and brief graphic panels. Fans will be delighted, references are made to adventures from previous books for faithful readers. While not my favourite in the series certainly up to par with the rest. Looking forward to the next volume which features one of my favourite cryptids, the jackalope

The Dragonbreath Series involves a cast of reptilian (and sometimes amphibian) characters who experience typical life challenges for juvenile and middle grade readers. Challenges and issues (halloween trick or treating) are flavoured with a little fantasy (ghosts) to make the books more engaging. Graphic images help the reading interest along. These are great books for those boys in grades 3 to 6, who aren't reading at grade level or who still have a younger boy sense of humour.
