King Lear: Oxford School Shakespeare (Oxford School Shakespeare Series)

Good book, Good quality
Ordered for my English literature course. The book itself is great- no real point in reviewing Shakespeare, but it is one of his more interesting stories, so I recommend it even for those outside the classroom. This edition is great for classroom use, with character and act guides built into the book, along with informative illustrations and definitions of the more obscure old-English phrases. Overall, one of the best editions of this book yet.

A very good version of one of the best Shakespeare plays
This edition of King Lear is an excellent version of one of the best Shakespeare plays. The book explains much about the play. I enjoyed the play very much. Shakespeare had a deep clear understanding of human nature which he demonstrates in many ways in King Lear. Two of the many insights he gives us are (1) even very nice moral parents can give birth to scoundrels and (2) never give away what you have to children while you are still alive. They have agendas different than yours. Both of these behaviors are shown in the Bible. For example, the two first humans God created and considered good bore a son who became a murderer. Moses the Lawgiver gave laws to the Israelites to make them better people, but his descendant became a priest for an idol, as indicated in the biblical book Judges.

Version recommended by teacher
This version has translations of unfamiliar words in a column on the side as well as summaries of the scene at the beginning in order to help you understand the context and thus the speech more easily. Also it is like a study guide in itself, as it has commentaries on all the scenes as well as substantial quotes from critics as well as background info. However for deeper understanding and critical analysis I recommend using York Notes. I'm currentlly using both for my A2 Literature exam, and York Notes helped me to obtain A* in GCSE and A in AS level. I'd also recommend using Sparknotes, they have detailed critical notes also-which are free-as well as a "no fear Shakespeare" section were a column of the play is adjacent to a column which is the play's translation in simple English. These are all incredibly useful.
