No issues and I like it a lot so far
I am reviewing Guitar Pro 6. I just received this and used it once today, for the first time. I previously tried a sample of Guitar Pro 5 and was not impressed enough to buy it. If I recall, it may have been buggy but its been a long time. This was not the case with Guitr Pro 6. Here's my experience, after one day:The product package shows some product capabilities, which is good because there is nothing in the box but the disk and a single small sheet with the Serial number and basic install info. A getting started guide would have been nice. Or I guess I can go to their website and see what's there!I installed this on a Desktop PC with an Intel Core 2 Quad processor running Vista 64-bit O/S. My monitor is a 22" flatscreen in a high resolution setting (relevant to the viewing experience)The software installed quickly and easily with no issues. (+10 points, and job 1 for any software.)I play both guitar and bass, and I used it today to do some Bass notation. It was much easier and more intuitive to setup and run with than Finale Notepad 2008, which I have been using for notation.Without any instruction I was able to quickly figure out how to set up an electric bass staff and tab, and start entering music. It was quick and easy to figure out how to change to 6/4 time for some arpeggios I was notating. I was able to move bars and sections around, copy and move things, add note names under notes (as lyrics) and adjust how many bars appear on a line. The ability to include both left and right hand fingering is great and was fairly efficient to enter by comparison to my experience with notepad.I played around with changing the room sounds for reverb, the amp, and some effects. Nice addition that I will explore more with guitar notation next time I sit down and play with this.Overall, I found the note entry much faster and easier than using Finale and the interface more intuitive. Being able to enter notation FAST is the most important thing, as I want to spend my time playing. Using a full keyboard with a number pad and 4 arrows keys, and entering tab notation, allowing the standard notation to appear automatically, I was able to key in a 2 page set of exercises very quickly. The playback and the looper and trainer functions are nice. There is a guitar chord chart capability although I didn't actually use it to notate chords on the bass piece, I messed around with it and can see it being useful when I get to guitar parts instead of bass lines.I have not fully explored the product yet, but to perform the basic function I bought this for, which was fast and easy standard + tab notation, it worked great. With the trainer function and looper function plus the notation capability, well worth the price ($50).I have a midi cable on the way to try to connect a midi keyboard (and if that works, maybe get a midi guitar) and am hopeful that will be another cool upgrade in my capabilities.I will try to update this review with further insights as my experience develops.I've used quite a few guitar software tools and I would say this is one that every guitar player should probably buy. If you're on the fence, visit their website and download a trial version first for free and see if you like it.UPDATE - connecting a midi keyboard (piano) is a great way to speed the entry of notation. It connected easily and just "worked". plug and play, literally. If you are creating std notation plus tab, then you may need to adjust the tab since you can play the same note in different locations on the guitar. But, still faster than using the computer keyboard to get notes entered.

Must Have Tool For Guitarists
So far I really enjoy writing out my own guitar compositions. I used to use powertab which is that horrible program from the 90s that while free, is a pain to write things out. Guitar Pro 6 is much easier to write out my ideas. I also really enjoy writing the drum parts in GP6, even though the included midi drum sounds are really fake sounding. That being said the guitar and bass midi sounds aren't half bad if you spend some time tweaking the effects and EQs for them.*edit 10/08/13*I've been using this software for six months now and I just wanted to say that I believe this is the best investment I have ever made in regards to music. Not only for getting ideas down on paper, but for easy distribution to my fellow band mates and for ease of learning. It speeds up the learning process for new songs as well as allows you to practice difficult parts at any speed.I also use this software include using it as a metronome to rehearse my drum parts and to break down each beat and drum fill. It also works great in getting a project set up in Reaper Audio. Just export the midi from GP6 and import that into Reaper and it automatically sets up all the time signature and tempo changes so you can record live instruments easily. One final thing I will mention is that I use this software with Windows 8 with no issues at all.

Great For A Trained Musician And A Self-Taught Musician, Yet Touchy
Delivery:To start, this product arrived on time and was not damaged in transit.First Opinions:My wife and I quickly discovered that Guitar Pro 6 is a great product for it's price, but it does have a few flaws (listed in "Cons" below). However, I really can't say enough about how impressed my wife and I are with it.History (Our Back Story And Use Of This Program):First of, my wife and I have always enjoyed the paradigm of music in two separate methodologies… she is a trained orchestral musician (flute, piccolo, recorder) and I am a self taught musician (6 & 12 string guitar, saxophone, 5 string bass, double bass drums, banjo, violin, harmonica). She plays by notation and highly quantified sheet music as if she's known it her whole life on her first play through, while I play by ear and memorize a song immediately post one listen (plus I read tablature). My wife has a talent I would kill for, yet she says the same about mine. I consider tablature cheating after learning how much she knows, yet I have no issue exploiting it whenever possible for the love of music…lol. Since we are both stubborn, I have never bothered to learn notation, and she has never bothered to practice the principles of improvisation. As such, we rarely play together. However, this program just changed that. I have been able to write out tabs (within 2 hours from the products download) that were transcribed immediately to notation for her flute and she has been able to do the same in reverse (notation to tablature) from sheet music she already has. We even wrote out parts for her sister who plays violin. This is truly an impressive program. I can't wait to attempt drums next. In either case, we have had this program for less than 1 day and we have already used it to write and transcribe 6 songs which we played immediately afterwards.Technology (What System We Are Running It On):We downloaded Guitar Pro 6 to my MacBook Pro which runs OS X (version 10.8.5). It is important to note that it crashed immediately afterwards 4 times until I correctly added the "sound banks" into the program. It was a separate file on the disc I didn't consider until I noticed every time I attempted a new instrument it crashed, erasing everything. Since then, it has not crashed so I am crossing my fingers.Pros:1) You can easily make music for a multitude of instruments and print it immediately onto sheet music for each party involved.2) This programs accounts for tuning and scale variations along with many other components (bpm, palm muting, lyrics, drums, various instruments, etc).3) It is simple enough to learn "most aspects" without a manual. However, we recently discovered that Guitar Pro has an entire tutorial of five chapters listed on Youtube, so we hope this will fill in the leftover blanks we have.4) It's digital playback feature contributes greatly to identifying timing issues.5) If you have an inaccurate bar, like if you have too many notes in a specifically timed measure, the bar highlights in red until it is corrected. This is a nice feature since writing bars and timing can be a major headache for someone only versed in numerical tablature.6) There is a bank for writing drums, vocals (lyrics), and utilizing effects too. We have not attempted these options as of yet, but the ability to utilized each function is very intriguing.Cons:1) The program is touchy. As mentioned above, it crashed multiple times prior to not correctly loading the "sound banks," which was a separate file on the disc from the accrual download. However, it has not crashed since, so we are keeping our fingers crossed.2) One issue this program suffers from is that it comes without a manual. This is a nasty habit many programs are presenting with anymore and it very well might be the causation for all the crashing programs we read about on other Amazon reviews (not to mention our own crashes). However, it was by a happy accident we just discovered their youtube tutorials, so we hope that will help.3) Depending on you guitar's tuning, this program frequently has difficulty correctly identifying chords. The fret to finger correlations pattern properly, but the actually chord names typically are off. This has happened with Tune Down 1/2 step, Tune Down 2 step, and Drop D. However, it is typically accurate in standard tuning. That being stated, as long as the tabs and notation are correct, you can always omit the written chord names above the corresponding bar (when possible) if you are questioning yourself. Conclusion:This program is wonderful. It can work with both a trained orchestral musician and a self-taught musician who plays by ear and only knows tablature. In the 12 years my wife and I have been together, this was the first time we had the opportunity to share each others musical talents and that is a treat in itself. This program has also opened the ability to print sheet music for our friends and family. Such an ability could easily become a major attribute for Musical School Clubs, Small Garage Bands, Community Events , Religious Masses and/or Gatherings, Family Gathers (you have to have the family holiday music…whether you want it our not..lol), and even for sending out the printed sheet music to the Library of Congress for copyrighting personal musical scores (something I intend to do). The only true downsides are that it doesn't come with a manual (which creates a greater probability for it to crash), the fact that it can crash so easily, and that some chords are not recognized only in terms of there title (not notation nor tablature). Those are the only reasons we could not give the Program 5 stars, but 4 stars is still a very reasonable rating. We hope this review helped.
