I mostly use 3-4 mm vegetable tanned leather which seemed to be to flexible and thin to feed through this tool very well, so I ended up with belts of uneven width. Maybe there's a learning curve, but at the price of leather, I'm not willing to waste a lot on learning to use this. So, it's either not so easy to use or just doesn't work well with the leather I'm trying to cut. Also, the blades and need to be sharpened manually and I did not get many cuts before needing to sharpen. It seems like it would make more sense to design this tool around any of the different types of disposable blades such as utility knife blades. It seems to be made ok and is probably reasonably durable, but that's hard for me to judge since I have given up on it. For me, this is not a good value.

Decent entry-level tool at a fair price
This is a very basic, manual strap/belt cutter. There are similar, if not identical, versions of this Chinese-made tool available all over the web at about the same price ($12-15 usually) so at $13 at the time of my order this is right in the ballpark. There are much nicer/more accurate versions of this tool (like the Nattools one) but they are far more expensive, in the $75 range. For a beginning leatherworker or anyone with limited need this is probably the best solution-- use it a while, and if your skills begin to exceed the tool's utility then it's time to upgrade. As the images illustrate, this is a pull-type strap cutter. Once assembled (good luck, you'll need to look at the images online for help) making a strap is basically a two-step process: 1) set the width of your cut with the sliding scale and tighten the retainer, and 2) start the cut by carefully feeding your leather across the blade. Then you just pull the leather through, being careful to keep it aligned. It works. That said, it's much easier with leather that is not too light nor too thick; light leather (under 1 oz or so) will bunch up or stretch. I tried it with heavy, tanned harness leather (10oz) and it was very hard to pull through. For a 5-7oz leather belt it should work fine. The lack of clear instructions and the generally crude nature of the manufacturing makes this an entry-level tool, not a production one. There are better options, but they are far more expensive. I'd call this a good deal for what it is, either for minimal use for a few projects or for someone starting out in leatherwork. Anyone making lots of belts or straps will want to upgrade pretty quickly. But for what it does and how it works I think it's a good bargain. Recommended at this price point.
