I bought this filter for emergencies. We live in NC and have plenty of water around, but it may not always be clean. If a hurricane or tornado hits, I'll need a backup filter that can get us water. This thing has three filters that can clean up to 100,000 liters of water. That is enough water to keep a family of five thriving for months, which is invaluable in the event of an emergency when fresh/clean drinking water might be scarce. This filter has minor maintenance for cleaning out the filter portions after use. Super easy to clean and take care of and the instructions make it very clear. No batteries are needed, no special equipment to make it work. Just needs a tiny bit of elbow grease and you have clean water. An excellent bang for the buck.I give this filter 5 stars because it does exactly what I want it to do. I have not used the filter in the wild yet. I have taken it out of the package to inspect the parts and make sure it is functional. Great quality control and the filter is a solid little device. The pump works fine and the customer service has responded after I requested to receive their lifetime warranty to make sure all my needs are met. I have no doubt that they'll honor their lifetime warranty on their product and help me if there are any problems with the device.I hope this company gets plenty of customers buying their filters so that they can stay in business and provide products for anyone looking for a reliable filter to get fresh water whether for emergencies or recreation. It's a brilliant piece of equipment and I am extremely relieved to have one in my storage for emergency use and the occasional camping trip. I can't imagine why anyone in the tropical storm regions wouldn't buy one for a backup at the very least. It is very comforting to have something that will keep my family and I hydrated if all other clean water sources fail.I will update this review when I have a chance to use the product.

This one apart of my three part emergency preparedness water plan. First I use a 5 gallon bucket to collect nasty water from my local retention pond, then I rough filter that water through a t-shirt (I like the anti-microbial, fast drying kind) into another 5 gallon bucket, then I use this bad boy to physically filter that water to ”0.01microns” and then finally it goes into my Berkey. The Berkey could handle the nasty water straight, but it would shorten filter life, so I prep the water. If I suspect heavy virus content (people are camping/pooping near the water source, flooding, etc) I can treat the water with my solar powered chlorine generator (fits in your pocket) and the Florine’s smell and taste will later be removed by the Berkey.0.01 microns is the nominal (average) pore size, which means practically nothing, ABSOLUTE poor size (largest pore in the filter) is .025 microns. I’m basing this off of the fact that this filter was tested on a virus .025 microns large with success (it's also what the company told me). This isn’t bad though, the next smallest pore size I know about is the MSR and that’s ranges between $89-$350 with a poor size of .02 and it can only handle something like 396 gallons per filter, not exactly great for any sort of long term solution unless you stockpile lots of filters. Plus, the MSR doesn’t have any activated charcoal which means no toxins are being removed. On that note, it stinks that the charcoal filter on this doesn’t last longer. 26k gallons on the other two filters, but only 528 gallons on the carbon filter. It's not enough to say this isn't the best value water filter on the market (that I've found and I've done lots of research) it just means that it loses its limited heavy metal, bad taste/smell removal capabilities 2.9 months into an off the grid situation for a family of 3, best case, 2 gallons, per person, per day. Still not bad for $65!!!!!!!! Flow rate is good, it takes 10 minutes of non-stop pumping for every gallon of water filtered. Light enough to toss in a cargo pocket, well thought out and engineered, a million times better than life straw and any of their 2 micron filters that leave you wide open to a wide verity of deadly water born illness like Vibrio cholerae, not to mention every viruse out there! With this single $65 device, I can give my family of 3 w/ 2 dogs, 10 plus years of bacteria/ virus/ protozoa free water in an off the grid situation!Problem is, there are a lot more things than viruses and bacteria that can harm you. Heavy metals, a plethora of chemicals and toxins, etc. My very non-mobile, large Berkey, not only takes out all the critters, it also takes out over a hundred other chemicals, poisons, and metals, it even removes some forms of radioactive waste!. With two of these survivor filters (or one of the $100 extended hydration version) and my Berkey I'm ready to provide my family with over 20 years of the cleanest drinking water possible at the drop of a hat, and that's in a off the grid situation, drinking out of a retention pond surrounded by houses, in Florida!

I tested two of these filtration pumps now. I believe it is satisfactory. And, the company's customer service is top-notch.Recently I bought the one of these Survivor Filter PRO filtration pumps. It arrived in good condition and on time. I'm generally a bit of a skeptical person, so when I buy things like this I want to put them to the test right away. I believe it's best to be confident about it before you have to use it for real, to survive. So, I filled a cup with tap water, which using a TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meter reads at 750 ppm (parts per million) and I pumped it through the filtration pump.The TDS meter has a handy little gauge on the back, which reads:"0 to 50 ppm = ideal RO (reverse osmosis) or distilled drinking water";"50 to 100 = typical carbon filter or mountain spring water";"100 to 200 = hard water";"200 to 400 = marginally acceptable and typical tap water";"400 + is high TDS from tap or mineral springs";"500 is the EPA's maximum allowable contaminant level."With the first pump, after going through the pump the result was 730 ppm, down from 750. I also used purified water purchased at a water dispenser at my neighborhood convenience store. The purified water was tested before pumping, and after, just like the tap water. The purified water read in at 140 ppm, after pumping it through the filtration pump it read 120 ppm. I repeated this process several times with consistent results. Then I tried back-washing the filters and then tried again with similar results to the first tests.Survivor Filter company's customer service had already, by the time of the first tests, contacted me via email just to make sure I was happy with my purchase. I explained my concerns and they quickly, with no arm-twisting at all, agreed to send me new filters, free of charge. I gave them my delivery address. They kept in touch. And they asked me to confirm that I received it once it arrived. They even gave me an estimated delivery date.The new package from customer service arrived on time. I was expecting only a couple of new filters. What I got surprised me -- a new complete filtration pump, same model, with new filters for it. They even included a new carrying bag -- all free of cost to me, postage paid by the company. It is clear to me that Survivor Filter company's customer service is seriously interested in making sure their customers are happy.I have now tested the new replacement filtration pump. I used distilled water, store bought, prepackaged. I conducted 4 tests. The results are quite satisfactory this time. Note: I would consider 2 ppm variance to easily be in the margin of error for testing.Test #1 - 2 ppm and 28 ppm after going through the filtration pump.Test #2 - 0 ppm and 30 ppm after pumping.Test #3 - 0 ppm and then 5 ppm output.Test #4 - 0 ppm and the output was 7 ppm.It seems to me that using distilled water is a good idea because the trend seems to indicate some natural background contaminants were being flushed out of the system.I am confident that this filtration pump will serve me well when I'm camping and in any survival situation. I'm also happy with their exemplary customer service.

EDIT: This review has been updated to address my concerns about the listed weight. Previously it was stated the filter was 8 oz. However my own measurements were around 12-13 oz. After posting my initial review I see the manufacturer has now updated their website to list the current version at 12.8 oz, so I am giving this filter 5 stars!The filter seems to work fine - I've tested it on multiple occasions and it does what it is supposed to do.I do have one gripe, but this hasn't actually been an issue yet - the pre-filter isn't really a pre-filter per-se... It is a 0.1 hollow fiber filter (similar to a Sawyer or BeFree) that then goes into a carbon filter and then another finer 0.01 hollow fiber filter. That means if your water isn't pristine, the hollow fibers of the "pre-filter" might get clogged up with gunk just like a Sawyer would. However, I have not yet experienced this problem yet; I am just basing this on my own experiences with identical 0.1 hollow membrane type filters - they all do this. The solution of course is to place a coffee filter or bandana rubber banded around the pre-filter before you pop it in the stream, lake, stock pond whatever. This is just my opinion, but a real pre-filter would have a removable and user cleanable fine-mesh protecting the hollow-fiber element that goes directly into the water in order to protect clogging. See MSR Trailshot or MSR Guardian for what a mesh pre-filter looks like; the purpose of them is to keep silt and other large debris out of the hollow-fibers. Again, easily remedied with a coffee filter here for a fraction of the price of a Guardian.Anyway, I have put this thing into a couple nasty pools of water - one was chock full of algae. The other one was from a spring that was piped into a nasty rusty bucket full of mud and other debris. I was able to get reasonably clear, decent tasting water both times and this is a huge morale and confidence boost on long distance hikes. I have previously filtered from the same algae ridden source with an MSR Trailshot, and the water was still kind of green and tasted foul. Not so with the survivor filter - from the same source there was still a tinge of green to the water but it tasted totally fine. I say if you are concerned with the lightest weight possible, then this filter may not be for you - it weighs 12.8 oz. But if you are sick and tired of smelly green water from nasty sources that, while technically are safe to drink after filtering with a 2oz Sawyer, and want your filtered water to actually taste, smell and look pretty close to tap water, then I would wholeheartedly recommend this filter.

I was amazed by some of the reviews I had come across (Amazon, YouTube) re the Survivor system and this was after I had picked up a garden variety "filter" for home use at Walmart (which I returned after ordering the Survivor). the Survivor was able to take water that was virtually IMPOSSIBLE to even consider for ANY type use (even bathing) let alone DRINKING and yet it purified the water AND made it taste good at the same time. not exactly the same thing as turning water into wine but this was clearly a close second!I have been using my Survivor (I have both the manual and electric models) for TAP WATER mainly to double clean it (just in case) but also to improve the taste (typical city water) and it works great.compared to buying a Brita or similar home filter that only improves water taste (maybe some filtering as well) the Survivor is overkill in terms of cleaning tap water of pathogens but given the fact that it also acts as a "regular filter" for taste, I think it's well worth the money. Also, if there is ever a situation where I need to get drinking water in an emergency situation, I know that the Survivor can do that, the Brita (etc.) can't.The Survivor is also very compact. it's a great design and I'm a student of good industrial design.I highly recommend this kind of filter over any other "home filter" (except maybe RO units) because it serves double duty -- can improve taste (just like a "regular" home filter) AND it can purify water at any time if you need to do that (including camping out, backpacking, but also travel to other areas where water quality is questionable).I consider the Survivor system to be in a class of its own. a great tool with many advantages.one more thing ...Survivor has had its filter claims verified by an independent lab. it's one thing to claim something but when you have proof to back it up, that helps a lot.this is a tool that not only can make water taste better -- it can save your life.

This is the main filtration method I'm counting on in a shtf scenario. I also have an additional unit we use daily instead of tap water right on our counter. You can power it with 2 double AA batteries or plug it directly into the wall.With the decrepit state of the US infrastructure and a grid being pushed well beyond any normal capacity (thanks, data centers), every American should own a high quality, reliable & portable water filter.It's my understanding that the Survivor Filter Pro was designed by & used by military personnel with experience providing water filtration in third world countries. That speaks volumes about its reliability and quality.Alsi, the customer service is truly second to none. I've bought 3 different filter types from them and all have worked flawlessly. When one part ran down from being overused after two years, I called to ask if I could purchase replacement parts. To my shock (and delight) they immediately offered to replace the unit, no questions asked, shipped it out and it arrived 2 days later. Customer service like this just doesnt exist in many places any more. So I'm a customer for life.

This is one of the most effective and sturdy water filters I've seen on the market. The price is unbelievable for what you receive. For the other doomsday prepers out there, let's do some quick math. The component in this filter that goes first is the carbon filter, it isn't the most important part, but it's definitely nice to have to improve flavor. It goes out after 2,000 liters. The average person needs about 2 liters of water a day. So divide that 2,000 by 2 and you have 1,000 days. That's about 2.7 years this filter will for last one person before the LEAST important component is considered in need for replacement. For anyone out there thinking, "Well I have a family of three so". Okay that puts a damper on things as that is a lot of water that needs filtered so I would suggest getting two for several reasons. One, if one of the filters is damaged beyond use (which I see being unlikely) you have a back up. Two, faster water filtration since you can run two filters at once (put those kids to work!). And three, you really can't be to careful so like I said if one breaks you can scavenge the parts from the broken one and the usable one will last that much longer. To those worried about filtering bacteria and viruses, this thing will do it! That 0.01 microns is really small. However if you still have concerns like, "I don't want to poop myself to death", then boil the water after filtration, it's a bit over kill in my opinion but hey, whatever works right? This is the filter that will keep going and I recommend it to anyone looking for a good water filter.

I've used it on multiple occasions with different grades of poluted water.It does the job really well but I'm a bit sceptical about the durability of my unit, the handle sit rather loose.Edit 1I've used my survival filter pro for a very long time now and it has proven that it's a worthy companion on my hikes.I've connected a quick connect from Camelback to my output tube and now at every stop near water I can directly fill up my bladder and stay hydrated.I've used it in places where the water quality was questionable but I have to admit this little tool has proven that the filtration is very good and on par if not better then the competition.In places where I really didn't trust the water I've used (after filtering) some drops of hadex or other desinfectant.My doubts about durability eventually faded away and I hope this one will serve me for my next couple of hikes as well!!!

I have to say I was very impressed with this water purifier. I thought of buying the electric one but then I thought if I didn’t have a battery, it would be useless so I went with the hand pump one I tried it out on the water in a nearby river, I tested the water first without it being purified and then I purified it and it came out absolutely perfect to drink had no aftertaste to it. This thing is definitely a lifesaver. I bought the kit with the extra filters in my opinion well worth the money it has a back flushing system, so it cleans it back out again , so you’re ready to go again I kind of hate to say this, but the state the world’s in right now it’s a damn good thing to have. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is a bit of a survivalist like I am and just loves to get out and camp fresh clean water is a must watch. I have owned and used a number of different filters from various manufacturers including Katadyn, Sawyer, and General Ecology and this beats them all in the important (to me) features, firstly the filtration size is one of the smallest on the market and with three stages of filtration this gives peace of mind in use it's small, lightweight but sturdy with a comparable flow rate to the Katadyn Vario but at half the size and weight, There is nice attention to detail with this unit the clip for the inlet hose has one large 'tooth' that provided a secure hold on a threaded water bottle neck and a hydration bladder, it also has a protective sleeve that doubles as a cup and when fitted for travel would give storage room for a few small survival essentials (purification tablets, waterproof matches and some tea bags)The other benefit of this unit is each filter can be field serviced (to a degree) and replaced independently if needed, the new filters for my Katadyn are £45 that is the same price as the set of three for this unit but as you would normally only replace 1 of the 3 at a time then the upkeep of this unit is less painful for the pocket.I used this filter on reservoir water during heavy rain so it was exceptionally cloudy with silt but the water came out clear and sweet.I can also rate this companies after sales support as during a recent cold spell I was negligent with the filter and it froze solid, as this is something that is warned against in the instructions in every filter I have owned (water expands on freezing damaging the filters from within) I contacted the email address supplied with the product to ask if I should replace the whole unit or just the filters, I had a response the same day that I would only need to replace filters and that they would give me a discount and even provided three Amazon links for the correct filters.Amazing product even better customer care, buy it you won't regret it
