Close to perfection...Simply not enough of it
A potentially routine remake of 60's classic love/drama commands a following all of it's own. THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR reflects the tantalising emotional balance of the lead characters played immaculately by Russo and Brosnan. The soundtrack far from sitting in the background stakes a genuine claim in the "best supporting" category with a lush collection of painstakingly arranged, magnificently played orchestral creations augmented by songs from traditional Jazz as well as Central-American and African equivalents. A beautifully mastered recording of detailed, occasionally challenging but never self-indulgent playing. We are allowed full renditions where half of the tracklist details said "songs" but are denied full exposure to the extended versions of the remaining cinematic backing. This is usually the wise path for OST releases, but a little short sighted for the remade THOMAS CROWN whose well-chosen selection of pieces easily stand critical listening without moving picture accompaniment. Occasional fade-outs suggest there was more to come before someone shouted "it's a wrap!" and we are left with just the bits that hit the screen.I bought mainly for STING's mercurial treatment of the original's signature Windmills of Your Mind - an aural delight by itself. SINNERMAN is musical madness of the most addictive form. Remarkable for an ending lasting considerably longer than the song itself, here it is played out in full in a dramatic 10 minute plus complete working that simply has to be heard to be believed. It is captured here with sufficient intimacy to preserve even the connect of NINA SIMONES own fingertips stabbing furiously at piano hammers in the triumphant conclusion and the stick tips picking out surface variances on the high hat.But the treasures, albeit sometimes abridged, abound in BILL CONTI's meticulously prepared score that will command enduring attention from the more patient ear.MEET MS. BANNING is simply exquisite yet ends abruptly at barely 70 seconds to make way for the rousing GOODNIGHT/BREAKING & ENTERING. COCKTAILS and QUICK EXIT could not be more accurately titled, especially the latter that again provokes frustrations by grabbing it's coat scarcely a minute after arriving. The motion picture is lavish irreverence, having a damn fine time for no other reason than how it good it feels. This score is a perfect partner in every respect.

Great soundtrack, but...
Great soundtrack, but, and don't hate me for saying this, Nina manages to spoil Sinner Man!!I enjoyed that track for about the first eight and a half minutes, but then it's cringe-worthy after that. Do yourself a favour and fade it out at that point. Yes, it's an epic length for a tune, and in the film they only use the good bit, thankfully, which is perhaps why you are considering buying the soundtrack. Well, you will enjoy the soundtrack, but keep in mind what I say, eight and a half minutes for Sinner Man, no longer, seriously.

Good Affair
1st Sting fans, you need to own this, its the only source for the title track. 2nd its always a pleasure to hear Nina Simone's Sinnerman, mmmm. 3rd'ly there is some nice Jazz that plays along and you nature glimpses in your mind of the film. It was bought for her in Doors and it has not left the machine since it arrived. A CD of well constructed choice and sound, the film is not bad too

A truly wonderful CD, even if you've never seen the film
I really wanted this sound track, mainly because after seeing the film I couldn't get "Windmills of my mind" by Sting or "Sinnerman" by Nina Simmone out of my head (Yes I know they were performed originally by different artists but I like the versions by those artists!)The CD is wonderful, though not in the order of the film, the tracks are superb and provoke excellent memories of a superb film. However, seeing the film is not necessary here, this CD would sit well on anyone's shelf, with a fantastically romantic track by Wasis Diop and the superb orchesteral pieces to relax or inspire you. This is the best CD I have listened to in ages.
