Dave Weckl Contemporary Drummer + One
I love this play along package.Id say it is for the more advanced or at a minimum "intermediate" drummer. It is pretty advanced music, very syncopated.Ive ALWAYS loved Dave Weckl's drumming, ESPECIALLY his drumming in the 1980s which is when this was first available. I owned it back then as well, it came with a cassette! "Back then" it was too advanced for me. I since have repurchased it for the cd and a fresh copy of the charts and booklet that comes with it.The booklet explains / breaks down the songs section by section, and Dave explains some of what he played on each tune, mainly the "key" areas / transitions and grooves. Each song includes a fold out chart, loose not bound to the book (to a book). The cd contains the original recordings with Dave's playing and another WITHOUT any drumming so you can play along to them.It is instructional as well, as far as breaking down what Dave played on these songs, but it is not a progressively instructional book. It assumes you are already at the level of musicianship and as a drummer, to be able to actually play these tunes.I am not sure HOW they recorded these tunes, but in theory, you have to have your playing solid enough / tight enough to be able to play all of this to sequences. The meter / tempo / accuracy of execution of ALL rhythms is dead on as if it was recorded using a sequencer and perhaps musicians as well (Dave Weckl being one of them). If you like Daves drumming and want insight into it, this package is GREAT because like mentioned he breaks down each song in the included booklet and explains each section, key drum fills, lead ins, etc. Then YOU have a chance to play drums on these songs instead of Dave, and you have a chart for each tune to do so with.CONS:SOME of the transcriptions provided ARE INCORRECT. Island Magic being ONE example... the 7/8 groove at the latin section ("Letter B") is transcribed incorrectly. By watching his video of this song and by just listening to it he never orchestrates the left hand on the toms, which is how it is transcribed. Also, if counting 7/8 like this: 1 e an duh 2 e an duh 3 e an duh 4 e - then repeat for however many measures - the LAST bass drum not is transcribed correctly: the bass drum is TRANSCRIBED to be ON the "an" of beat 3, which is where the snare is played, when it IS PLAYED BY DAVE it is on the "duh" of beat three (the note immediately AFTER the snare on the "an" of beat 3. This is (part of what) makes it sound / FEEL so "hip" / cool. There are many dif ways you can count in 7/8, I was just trying to clarify that inconsistency for you. So as far as the groove is concerned, it is orchestrated incorrectly, AND rhythmically incorrect as well. SO BEWARE OF THIS!ALSO: the "Main Groove" "Letter [A]" is transcribed incorrectly as well. Daves transcription has the open hi hat on the "and" (or "an") of beat THREE... but he PLAYS the open hi hat on the "and" of beat TWO throughout the ENTIRE tune (when he is playing that section on the hi hat - because he does alternate that section more then once on both the hi hat and ride cymbal)BIG DIFFERENCE - sounds and feels COMPLETELY different (the "an" of beat TWO versus beat THREE - very different in sound and feel)So letter [A] AND letter [B] are BOTH incorrectBEWARE! there are alot of discrepancies (Im sure more as I sift through the entire package)I havent gone through EVERY tune yet so I can not as of now point out every error in transcription. But CLEARLY a tom is NOT a snare drum... and the "duh" of beat 3 is not the "an" of beat three either (Letter [B]). Just as the "and" of beat TWO is not the same as the "and" of beat THREE (Letter [A]).I wanted this originally to be able to figure out WHAT Dave was playing (in the 80's). But NOW I have a good enough ear and ability to be able to understand these songs, and figure out the errors in their transcription.I do not mean to go on here, but originally I wanted this play along package to be able to play some of Daves grooves not being educated enough at the time to figure them out by ear. So when I worked these out and they DID NOT SOUND like what Dave played it got me frustrated... but NOW I know (the transcriptions were incorrect - not me). So I wanted to share that with you!I hope my review helps.OVERALL I think this is a GREAT play along package, if you can look past/figure out the inconsistencies in transcriptions. You can learn alot here, because again the execution of all rhythms is spot on (my analogy having to be able playing to sequences). To me this is classic Dave Weckl drumming, good stuff. THIS is what initially made Dave (or helped make Dave) a drumming icon. Classic.Great package if you like these songs and Dave Weckl's drumming.

Outstanding way to improve
I think this is for imtermediate up to very advanced players. Although is has been out for many years it is one of the best ways to prepare for studio work or just to handle a great variety of music. If you want to learn how to play in odd times especially 7 The Island Magic tune and description is like nothing else on the planet to understand various ways to count and feel 7/8.There is so much effort in this product it is amazing. The real key is Dave's thought process written in the pages before you even start playing and recording. For a serious player with an eye to being a real professional this is a must to go through. I recorded myself to Island Magic hundreds of times and can smoke anything in 7/8 thanks to Dave.On a sadder note this package helped me to realize I could not be a true professional as I just did not have the natural ability it takes to be a top level drummer. Sure I could have been lucky to get in a pop band and been on Mtv but to be a respected player my recordings just did not sound clean and smooth like Dave after more than enough attempts. If you live and breathe the drums you need this package.

Had to rip the files from the cds on an older computer
So happy and excited to get this! Had to convert to mp3 from an older computer so I could hear the songs. It’s all there but seems to be an older .cda format? Whatever, it works now and is awesome.

Old skool now... but still excellent!
Heh! I remember this the first time round when it was on cassettes...! Might be considered a bit 'old skool' now in the grand scheme of 'modern jazz fusion' drumming tutorial books... but there's a lot here and it's all still so very useful. Hard not to recommend (along with his same-era instructional DVDs) if you want to add some technicality and musicality to your playing.
