Not essential and It's Expensive.
The Ipanema dosing cylinder is not essential and it's expensive. It is a nicely machined aluminum ring you can put on top of a 58mm portafilter to guide your freshly-ground coffee neatly into the portafilter. I guess it is useful if you do not grind coffee directly into your portafilter but why don't you? I bought this dosing ring when my espresso machine was new and I did not understand I did not need it. The dosing ring does what it is made to do but you do not need it.

Nice addition
I have been using the 'WTD' for distributing my grinds in the portafilter basket for years. This is a massive improvement over the cut-off single serving yogurt cup I was using.

Need this
If you don't have this then you need to get it. It will increase the ease with which you build your shots. It will decrease the stray grounds around your working area.
