I had no intention of buying a carpet cleaner right now and it wasn’t yet time to shampoo my carpets (I do every 6 months) but recently my poor little dog got sick so I HAD to clean the carpets immediately. Wouldn’t you know it, my old shampooer quit working when I needed it most critically. So I bought this one. At first I wasn’t impressed. I couldn’t see the water coming out and the carpet didn’t appear very wet so I thought it wasn’t really doing much. THEN when it did the dry portion, I saw it working and was shocked at how much dirt came out of my carpet. Other than the areas where the dog got sick, my carpets appeared to be clean and not need shampooing yet. This told me this cleaner is getting the deep down dirt that can’t be seen on the surface and that my old shampooer was missing. And the dry time is awesome. It really picks up the water better than any I’ve ever used. I also love that I don’t have to mix the shampoo. It does it for me. The waste water tank is so large that I can cover a lot of area before having to empty it. In fact, I didn’t have to empty it until I was finished with the whole room and it still wasn’t full. The rinsing is crucial though. I ran out of time and didn’t rinse at first (had to come back and do it next day). Without rinsing, you can feel the soap residue on the carpet - it makes it feel rough instead of soft. It’s easy enough to take the soap container off and go back over it with just water. I LOVE that so many of the parts are removable for cleaning. It’s so easy to clean! And easy to reassemble the parts after they’ve dried. I also love that it has a dry only feature so I can go back and make sure I’m getting maximum water back out. One great thing about this is when I did the rinse, it was only pulling water back out. NO DIRT! That showed me it had gotten the carpet clean the first time! My only critique is that sometimes when I press the dry only button, I realize after a few minutes that it has jumped back into wash mode on its own and I’m putting more water back in when I didn’t mean to. I’m not sure if it times out or if it’s just a glitch. But I’ve learned to keep an eye on the button to catch that sooner. Otherwise this thing is great and I highly recommend. Hasn’t had any adverse effect on the plastic or the seals, and I’ve cleaned about 2000 sq feet of carpet and one stairway… probably 3-4 days of steady work, with no problems whatsoever. **Q: How does this machine do with hair? No matter how much i vaccum, there is hair. Does it get stuck in the brushes too badly?** A: I have a cat so hair is a major problem for me. The Smartwash does pick up the hair and it can get stuck in the nozzle going to the dirty water tank. The brushes will stop. But it is fairly easy to clean both the nozzle and brushes. I do recommend that you follow the rinse instructions after using the cleaner. It rinses the carpet to remove the cleaning solution from the rug. All you do is remove the bottle with the cleaner solution and go over the carpet again with just clean water. **Q: Can I purchase any carpet shampoo to use within hoover, for example an oxy shampoo for carpet and vehicle seating and floor?** A: As the other answers have already stated, the short answer is yes you can technically use any cleaning solution you'd like work this (and basically any and every other items you use). I mean, it's not like the machines know if you're using a different solution other than the brand who manufactured the machine so technically yeah you can. However, the solution that's suggested for the machine does work a little better and I like how the solution contains a quick dry formula in it so the carpets dry much faster when I've used that. So this is not at all advised for others to try because well, like I said already, the manufacturer prefers that the same brand of cleaning solution is used, which is what I do every other time i clean my floors, but on the times in between using their brand of cleaner I make my own! I usually just use a combination of vinegar, blue dawn dish soap, peroxide and liquid fabric softener. I personally add 2 caps full of snuggle fabric softener into the actual water reservoir every single time I use it. It helps make my house smell good and keeps my carpets nice and soft too. Easy to assemble, good instructions on use. Super easy to take apart to thoroughly clean, a feature my old one did not have, so that was a game changer for me. It's not too heavy or cumbersome. Has good suction to lift a lot of the water from the carpet so it dries faster, you have to take your time and not rush this process or your carpet won't drive as well as it could. If your clean water tank runs out of water and you don't notice right away, there is a change in the sound of the motor to tell you your out of water. It does the same if the dirty water reservoir gets too full. I like that too. The only thing I saw that could be called a negative, is there are no buyable replacement parts, so through use if a belt breaks you can't get another to replace it . They do have a warranty you can buy to cover that. I am hoping the machine will last for many years of use.
