Bought for my granddaughter who's just started school and was told she needed a 'Book Bag' as opposed to just using her 'School Bag' which has ample space and compartments. However, couldn't find one locally so searched on Amazon. This one I selected has mostly good reviews and was a great colour (a secondary feature you might think but not to a five year old!). From what I've seen, it is well made and sturdy with a handy clip on shoulder strap as well as a handle). Velcro fastening, good size. Newly received, five stars. What I cannot say at this point is how long it will last or how well it will perform so I've handed to my five year old to field test it. What can go wrong?!

Just as described. Weneeded this for school as our child’s teacher told us the first day his backpack will remain in the class for PE Clothes and he need s book bag for letters. As I waited a few day for the order to arrive I noticed other parents were carrying their book bag in hand and since I walk with two young boys, it was not going to be convenient. For this reason I needed a cross body or messenger strap as advertised here. The bag’s dimensions were disclosed but seeing it up close it is slightly larger than the actual book bag style the other kids use. This however was not a deterrent, and my son was excited that he could put it over his shoulder. Mostly I carry the bag at drop off and pick up, because it’s slightly large for my 4 yr old, but it does the job, it’s a water resistant fabric and besides letters, there room for his fleece, hood or coat to fit on the days when he doesn’t need to wear it. So it’s a practical bag and a better option because of the shoulder strap, which is adjustable. The quality of the fabric is nice and thick too, with a nice strong Velcro closure.
