The book I received was supposed to be new but it was an old book they tried to rebound unsuccessfully. It looked totally different from the product photo and smelled horrible. Some of the pages were dirty like it was thrown away and someone salvaged it.

The book is good value for money, delivery was smooth.

An Ayurvedic authoritative book medicinal herbs. Lots of Sanskrit for the professional and student alike. I am so glad I was able to get it here in the US

This book is really excellent and unique, covering ayurvedic herbs in detail. This is THE book you must get, if you want to learn ayurvedic herbs and their uses, energetics and medical effects. The book is really fantastic, and a definite "must-have".I would like to thank the bublishers - Chaukhambha Publications for publishing this fantastic book. It is really the best english language book on Dravyagunavigñan available on the market, and really far superior to the one by Dr. J.L.N. Sastry. The book is written in very good english, very well laid out and really excellent pre-publishing work has been done. I would like to thank Dr. Gogte, the publishers and the entire translators & specialists team for doing this work.However, there is one significant shortcoming that I have came across. It is the choise made by translators to translate all the medical effects of the herbs, known as karmas, to english, and omitting the originals sanskrit terms. This, while making the text easy to read, often becomes problematic, since we practitioners are thinking in terms of the sanskrit karma, and the sanskrit word conveys the meaning much better and deeper than the english word. Since karma is so significant part of the action of the dravya (substamce), the sanskrit term should have been retained, at least in brackets).In the Part I (Basic Principles of Dravyagunavigyan), Chapter Ten (Karma), lists the karmas only in english (p. 196-199), without mentioning the original sanskrit term. This is actually very misfortunate decision by the translators, as nowhere else the terms are explained, and the result is very confusing. Yes, it is nice that different actions are listed in english. But like this it becomes just a listing of english words, and not an elaborate explanation of the karmas. With this listing, one does not actually learn much.Later on in the book, in the Part II (Medicinal Plants) the karmas are often given in sanskrit (tridoshanashak, kaphavatashamak, tridoshaghna, pittavardhak etc) for the doshic effect, which is fine and correct. But these terms are not explained properly anywhere in the book, as the tranlators had chosen to omit the sanskrit terms in Part I (Karma, p. 196-1999).Also more descriptive and specific sanskrit karmas, such as sagnyasthapak, shirovirechan, kaphaghna, kusthaghna, medogami, tvachagami, raktapittavaradhak, brimhana are mentioned in Part II, but they are not explained anywhere in the book. This is a shame. The part I (Karma) would have been the right place to do it, and I am sure Dr. V.M. Gogte did it in his original Marathi work.I'd like to suggest the publishers to provide a list or table, where all the karmas are listed in sanskrit with proper english translations. This list could be published as errata on publisher's website, Facebook page etc, and then later on incorporated in the future editions of this book.For instance as follows:(I) Action on nerves / nervous system - (8)1) Medhya rasayana - Brain tonic2) Madakari – Intoxicant3) ?? – Consciousness restoring4) ?? – Sedative5) ?? – Causing insomnia6) ?? – Analgesic7) ?? – Convulsant8) ?? – Anticonvulsant(II) Actins on the senses - (20)1) Chaksusya – Strengthening the eyes2) ...3) ...

Superb book for those who want to have glimpse of ancient grandeur of Medicine with present day pharmacology for ayurveda students and doctors. It is must for all doctors because ayurveda is the mother of Medicine. Ayurveda doctors please don't prescribe allopathic drugs. Please contribute to ayurveda. It's my request.
