Stellar figure for the price - great sculpt, hair, and costume! 10 stars!
Purchased outside Amazon (BBTS) early. For the one sixth collector or the Middle Earth lover - IMO up and coming ASMUS - already known for their costume details and good quality costumes - just knocked this figure out of the park.Pros:1) Beautiful likeness of Gimli. Excellent paint and lifelike eyes. Thick silky wig and beard, with really well-done transition from skin to hair. Terrific strong expression. (Note in instructions not to wet hair/beard)2) Excellent costume materials - good quality fine ultra suede; fine thread ties, plastic/vinyl leather imitation not cheesy feeling - looks like leather. Lothlorien pin on sewn-together cloak (u take head off to put on helmet and cloak)3) Superb dwarf pattern details on boots, guantlets, belt. Terrific dwarf helm. Even the hair ornaments are carefully detailed.4) Worth buying for the diecast axes alone - what other company does work like this? 5 axes total all individually detailed - the quality shows and amazing on display.5) ASMUS has gone to work on complaints of "weak bodies" or ankles - Gimli feels heavy-ish and stands strong - I don't even use a stand with him. Articulation as expected w. layers of clothing - a bit stiff, but there are LAYERS here.At this price IMO a fantastic portrayal of Gimli and really has me looking forward to the Thorin and Bilbo releases upcoming. ASMUS has been coming along - their sculpts at times uneven, or really close but not quite; or they put out a great fig with weak ankles and so on. But ASMUS is a young company and IMO has put out fantastic stuff like the completely sold out Thranduil. IMO with Gimli I'd say ASMUS has arrived on the playing field.Cons - well, I don't have any. Some collectors have complained that the chain mail looks plastic and replaced with 1/6 chain mail by different methods. ASMUS Facebook page describes how the chain mail material was chose and also that dwarf mail is a bit different than "human" chain mail e.g. the dwarf mail is rings woven together w. thread. For me, on the shelf, I am happy with as is with the look - which, a foot away - looks like tightly drawn together metallic rings. If you want the "Two Towers" type mail from the comic scene when Gimli drops a mail shirt over himself you will have to customize.Overall - picked this fig up really to have at least one other dwarf to go with Thorin (and re the lore, they are distantly related). And Gimli turns out to be a fantastic stand-alone fig in his own right. Now I just hope ASMUS re-does Legolas (rooted hair and better sculpt than their first try of Legolas). Meanwhile - if you like dwarves/Middle Earth or just an amazing limited edition fig, I'd recommend this release. ASMUS is not as well known as Hot Toy but their figs - even with issues like off sculpts - their releases are labors of love and this is one of their best so far. 10 stars at this price point!PS - NOT for young children. The diecast axes have sharp points. This is a poseable collector item that should be treated with a bit of care; definitely not a toy.
