Heavy on the wallet and back but the images are incredible!
I've only had it out for a day but I can already see this lens being a regular on my R5 and R6 bodies. The lens is heavy, no doubt about it, but the IQ is insane and well worth it. It is very fast focusing and produces beautiful colors. The images I posted as examples are on a low light day in a forest, the exception being my girls out in the open once we finished. This tank feels great in the hand while shooting and it has to give me at least a full stop of additional stabilization due to the weight. Great lens, absolutely amazing IQ, I just wish it was a bit cheaper, lol. If you can afford this lens and will use it, do not hesitate for a second, it is the best feeling lens that I've ever been out shooting with to date.

Unbelievably great lens
Yes, this lens is an expensive, it is big, it is heavy BUT: It is worth the cost, the size and the weight. The pictures are unbelievable. I'm not sure what Canon has done with this lens, there are a lot of elements, and I would think there would be significant light loss through them, but there is not. Also, I've read that the sensor in the EOS R is the same one as the 5D mark IV. yet the images I get on the EOS R with the native RF lens are much sharper, with more detail, better colors, etc than I get on the 5D Mark IV. For years I have taken pictures. I've let my subject judge if the picture was good or not. With this lens I'm changing gears. I'm taking into account the gestalt of the entire photo. The bokeh is smother than any other lens I have used. The subject just pops out of the photo and the background can now be used to enhance the entire photo. This lens has set a new standard in image quality and resolving power. It seems that Canon has gone back to basic physics and they are taking advantage of the close proximity between the lens and the sensor.

Be Careful - It's Heavy and Beautiful... and valuable
Update: never purchase items of value from Amazon. It's been more than a month since their receiving bay accepted my return and I still haven't been refunded the purchase price. Save yourself the hassle. Buy this from a local retailer. And never trust amazon with any amount of money. Two things: First - this lens is outstanding. Know this: if you are considering purchasing it, rent it and it will make the decision for you. Either the outstanding images you're capable of making with this piece of kit will "outweigh" the actual weight and bulk of the lens or it won't. You can rent this lens at local shops for $10-$50/day in my area (depending on how many days) so grab it for a week and take it for a spin. Honestly, price didn't even figure into wanting it or not. If you want it, you'll find a way to save and make it happen. It took me a while, but I made it happen. It's that good of a lens. Second - be aware that the value of this lens makes it a target for theft from the supplier all the way to your daily use. That means be wary of an online purchase of this item. You'll likely see verified purchase above this review but that is a bit of a lie. I *did* purchase this lens from Amazon. And to their credit, they at LEAST made me sign for it when it came, so it wouldn't get porch-pirated. Well, if you do have to sign DO NOT sign until you've physically opened the box and verified with your own eyes that the lens is in the box. And I don't mean the Canon box is in the cardboard shipping box, I mean lay your eyes on glass. If I had even visually inspected the contents of the Amazon box, I would've noticed the Canon box had already been opened which would've been a red flag. Unfortunately, once I opened my box, long after the delivery guy had left, I found it contained a Canon 100mm Macro lens. Extra points to Amazon for working with me on getting it returned properly. That process, while annoying, was straightforward and simple. My advice, do what I did eventually, and buy this somewhere locally, where you can visually inspect it before accepting it. But DO buy it. If you've read this far, you're gonna eventually anyways.

One Of The Best Zoom I've Ever Owned From Canon!
I've owned many L lenses from Canon over the decades and this has got to be among the best of the best. First of all, the lens is very chonky, it's huge and heavy and that's the downside of it for many people. However, that the only downside for me about this lens. Everything else about it is a plus. The lens is fast, tack sharp and the sharpness doesnt fall off in the corners either. Being able to shoot at f2 from 28-70 is phenomenal, it can cover 28, 35, 50, and medium tele at 70 flawlessly. Looking at the resulting images, you probably think that it came from a prime lens. I wish this lens came with IS and i wish that it was a bit wider at 24mm, but that would probably add on more weight to this lens. I still love the lens and i always carry it with me. A great investment if youre doing professional work. If you have the budget for this lens as a hobbyist, it wont disappoint you either.

Game changer!!
Oh my word. Where has this lens been all my life?! Haha but really. I've been a full time wedding and portrait photographer for 14 years now, I have always shot solely with prime fixed lenses. I was taught that once you add a zoom, you'll lose some quality in your aperture (with the exception of massive prime lenses for wildlife and such). HOWEVER, I was wrong when it comes to this baby! Crazy sharp images, super fast focusing capabilities and you can stay at f2.0 from 28mm all the way to 70mm! GAME CHANGER. I can shoot an entire wedding without changing my lens now. The price is a lot, but if photography is your job....this lens is totally worth the investment and you won't regret adding it to your arsenal of lenses....in fact you might find that purchasing it kinda diminishes your need for your 35mm and 50mm lenses. So flippin happy with this lens!

Must have for low light shooters...
This lens is like the Thor’s hammer of lenses. I purchased it to shoot events and to harness the full strength and might of f/2.0 and I wasn’t disappointed. Due to the thickness of the barrel the lens is able to allow more light into the lens at lower iso wide open and faster shutter speed. I shoot Mainly nightclub events so the lens was a dream to use. No image stabilization? Whatever... I can shoot at 1/60 shutter speed at 320+ easy and still Capture ambient light in the background at certain venues on my brand new r6 which has ibis with no motion blur. I have zero regrets about the price because now I have about 5 primes lenses in the form of one zoom lens. The only trade off is the weight which is around 3lbs but it’s ok. I haven’t been to the gym in a while so this is my new fitness regimen and will get lighter for me as I get used to it. After the first night I used it my pectoralis majors are sore AF from lifting up my camera for crowd shots paired with a custom bracket rotating camera bracket and a 600rt which puts my rig at around a whopping 5-7lbs with my adapted ef70-200 strapped to my waist. I shot the event for 3 hrs and I’ve done at least 60 reps of overhead lifts, around 80 squats to shoot certain people at eye level due to me being 6’2”. A few women who I photographed were twerking dropping down low to the ground caused me to have to shoot at that vantage point causing me to have to execute maneuvers that would equate to about 30 upright burpees and I loved every single minute of it. My glutes really took a beating as well. Overall I’m impressed with the cameras ability to pull off 90% accuracy at f/2 in low to almost no light. It would’ve been 100%if I didn’t use eye af due to it sometimes locking onto faces and more contrasty areas in the background but that’s a user error and something I will be able to improve as I use the camera more using expanded cross points af. The Focus motors seem pretty fast as well and have never been able to capture so efficiently in my 12 years of shooting. This lens body combo is by far the greatest rig I’ve used to date. Mirrorless technology is the future of the photography industry and it’s still at the beginning stages. I can’t imagine it getting any better after a another generation of R bodies and RF lenses but it will and I’m excited and scared at the same time. If you can afford it... buy it. You will not regret
