Circle of Friends [DVD]

Been waiting for this DVD title forever! Fair price, new in packaging and it works in DVD players found in America (not all online outlets warn that a DVD is unplayable as Amazon does). Very happy with this purchase.

Great story, great acting, and the love story is timeless. One of my favorite movies. I check back hoping to find it available via streaming. Thankful I own a DVD version and never had any issues as some say with the current version comments I am seeing.

FINALLY! I loved this movie when I was younger, having seen it when it had first been released. I had the most difficult time finding it on DVD.After it being so long since I had last seen it I was a little nervous on how it would hold up against the test of time. Of course the fact that it was essentially a period piece helped. I find that period pieces have the best chances of not being ruined when watched years later. Circle of Friends stands up to that test of time and comes out fairly well. Of course it's decades later and I know what Chris O'Donnell looks like all grown up (same with the ever gorgeous Minnie Driver). I also understand the content a little better now that I'm not a little girl watching a movie solely because 'the cute boy from The Three Musketeers' was in it. I understand Nan's situation with Colin Firth (who is adorably young, although a total cad) and the tragedy of Bernie's failed romance. I'm so glad I finally found it

This film is quite charming and visually lovely. It was a bit of a sleeper when it came out. Based on Maeve Binchy's best selling novel, the film ensemble cast is led by Chris O'Donnell, Minnie Driver, Alan Cumming, and Colin Firth. Driver, Cumming, and Firth were all still relatively unknown when this film was made; Chris O'Donnell was the biggest star at the time. Minnie Driver and Chris O'Donnell play a young couple falling in love, but their path to happiness isn't always sure or easy. Driver plays one of three young Irish women who are encouraged to go to college, but ultimately to marry and have a family. Set in Ireland after WWII, social mores are starting to change- but in many ways, the fate of the young women remain tied to the precepts of the Catholic Church of the time. Ciaran Hinds makes a cameo as a sociology professor.

Was looking for this movie - couldn't get it as Digital - so went DVD route and due to it's age had to purchase as used- Very good for a decent price.Received in great condition, the DVD played with no issues and the movie as I remembered it was just just as fantastic now as it was then! :) Chris O'Donnell(very young), Minnie Driver, Colin Firth, Alan Cumming (so creepy in this one).If you like Maeve Binchy books this a good movie for you!

Loved the Irish flavor.

Great movie

This is a little-known British classic, and the story is from the Maeve Binchy novel of the same name. It includes a coming-of-age story of 3 girl friends as they move into their college years, as well as a look into their experiences with First Love, with a little mystery thrown in as well. A young Colin Firth is one of the villains of the tale, but Minnie Driver's performance is the real star of the show. Chris O'Donnell is also excellent in the entertaining and well-written story. Recommended for older teens and adults.

I do like this film very good storyline and great actors

“And in Ireland, people have very long memories...” This movie is never on tv or streaming in Canada! And it’s so good! I mean, Chris O’Donnell’s Irish accent is questionable at best, but Minnie Driver is so brilliant, and the picture painted of the town and its characters is awesome. Other highlights include people being referred to as “articles”, Colin Firth being a douche, a game of draughts with strings attached, and the brilliant Alan Cumming as creepy Sean Walsh. His pronunciation of “film” is awesome. I have wanted to watch this movie again for so many years but never found it anywhere! So this DVD was perfect.

Als ich diesen Film zum ersten Mal vor einigen Jahren im TV gesehen habe, bin ich förmlich dahin geschmolzen. Das war in einer Zeit, in der ich mich absolut mit der Hauptfigur der Benny identifizieren konnte. Seither sind zwar ein paar Jahre vergangen, aber ich liebe 'Circle of friends' immer noch über alles.Story: Die Freundinnen Bernadett 'Benny' Hogan (Minnie Driver), Eve Melone (Geraldine O'Rowe) und Nan Mahone (Suffron Burrows) wachsen zusammen in einem kleinen Ort irgendwo in Irland auf. Die Mädchen sind so unglaublich unterschiedlich. Benny ist Einzelkind. Sie ist der Augenstern ihrer Eltern, die eigentlich für ein Kind viel zu alt waren. Die Mutter meint es mit der Tochter immer zu gut und füttert sie ausreichend. Somit ist Benny ein wenig moppelig und kann das überhaupt nicht leiden. Der Vater unterhält ein Herrenbekleidungsgeschäft im verschlafenen Ort am Lande. Eve ist ein Weisenkind. Ihre Mutter starb bei der Geburt und ihr Vater nahm sich am Steinbruch vor einigen Jahre das Leben. Seither lebt das Mädchen im Weisenhaus bei den Nonnen. Nan hingegen ist ein Schönheit. Das einzige Mädchen unter ihren Brüdern. Der Vater ist ein Arbeiter, der gerne vermögend wäre sich aber bewust ist, dass er dies nie schaffen wird. Bald zieht Nan aus dem kleinen Ort weg und lebt fortan in Dublin. Benny und Eve hingegen wachsen nebeneinander auf und sind dicke Freundinnen. Nach Abschluss der Schule steht die Möglichkeit der Universität vor den beiden Mädchen. Sie wollen nach Dublin gehen. Zähneknirschend erlaubt Bennys Vater seiner Tochter, dass sie an die Universität gehen kann, vorausgesetzt sie kommt jeden Abend wieder nach Hause. Eve würde im Nonnenkloster in Dublin leben und für ihren Lebensunterhalt dort arbeiten. Benny ist besonders angewidert von Sean Walsh (Alan Cumming) dem einzigen Mitarbeiter ihres Vaters, der es ganz offensichtlich auf sie abgesehen hat. Bereits am ersten Tag an der Uni lernen Benny und Eve den gutaussehenden Sportler und Medizinstudenten Jack Foley (Chris O'Donnell) kennen. Sofort verknallt sich Benny in den hübschen jungen Mann. Auch Nan taucht unverhofft wieder im Kreis der Freunde auf. Ihr Ziel ist es, sich einen reichen Mann zu angeln um ihren aufwendigen Lebensstil zu finanzieren. Da bietet sich Landadeliger Simon (Colin Firth) geradezu an. Zwischen Benny und Jack entwickelt sich, trotz aller negativen Prognosen, eine Beziehung. Auch zwischen Nan und Simon passiert mehr. Bis Nan schwanger wird und der Adelige sich nicht dazu bekennt ...!Dieser Film sprüht nicht nur von schönen Landschaftsaufnahmen aus Irland, sondern hat auch eine wunderschöne Geschichte. Die Basis für diesen Streifen bietet der gleichnamige Roman von Meave Binchy. Der ist allerdings ein bisschen anders als der Film. Trotzdem gehört 'Circle of friends' zu einem meiner absoluten Lieblingsfilme.Fazit: Auf jeden Fall ansehen. Ein romantischer und süßer Film für Liebhaber von Heile- Welt- Filmen und schönen Geschichten. Vor allem glänzen Chris O'Donnell und Minnie Driver als süßes, wenn auch etwas ungewöhnliches Paar. Traumhaft schön!
