You can only watch so many presentations of the famous five or so operas! This OPERA presentation was new to me and in the first instance was directed to an Italian audience.The storyline moves rather slowly, but the acting and singing were good.The production is on a smaller scale than say, the MET, but well done for all that. The two lead singers, JOAN AND THE KING, act and sing well. As an addition to your Opera library, this would be a SOMETIMES viewed ADDITION.

I saw this production live and Lisette Oropesa is the most sublime soprano I‘ve ever heard in my life. The production was fabtastic too. I can only recommend it.

This collection has great and not so great versions of the over 10 Verdi operas . I like for example version of Macbeth and Il Trovatore it has, when Les Vespres Siciliennes is too modern staging for my taste. That is always a problem with big collections of operas. But it's worth buying after all

This work predates Thchaikowsly’s for almost 4 years, and it is base don the Schiller play I have previously criticized for its lack of historical accuracy. It is essentially focused on three major voices, soprano, tenor and baritone, with a basso to spice it up. New Yorker Evan Bowers may not be a matinee idol, but he sails into the role with a bright, focused lyrico spinto tenor voice. Renato Bruson was 72 years old in 2008, when he took this role (first sung by him in1989) and it shows, with quite a wobble on many passages; yet his voice commands the stage and rises majestically in the ensembles. And then, Bulgarian Svetla Vassileva, who is not burned at the stake, as in “Maid”, but dies heroically in battle. She has been compared to a young Freni, and I concur: a voice both sweet nd powerful, she is onstage almost the whole time and keeps the silver purity of her voice as well as having great acting skills. She is one to watch. As to the production, solidly traditional, thank God. All in all, a joy to watch and to hear. Thanks to Tiziano Mazini and “Tutto Verdi”!

Bel cofanetto con le ultime 12 opere (quelle scritte ex novo e le revisioni di lavori precedenti, cioè "Macbeth", "Don Carlo" e "Simon Boccanegra") del cigno di Busseto.Sono regie più o meno all'antica, dalle tradizionalissime "Aida", "Simon Boccanegra", "Traviata" e "Forza del destino" con bei costumi d'epoca, obelischi e fondali dipinti, al "Trovatore" trasportato dal medioevo all'epoca di Verdi, e agli stilizzati ma fedeli "Don Carlo" di Willy Decker, "Rigoletto" di David McVicar (con nudi integrali in scena), "Macbeth" di Phyllida Lloyd (la regista di "Mamma Mia!"), e "Falstaff" di Graham Vick.Una completa reinterpretazione si ha solo coi "Vespri siciliani", dove, invece che nella piazza grande di Palermo o nella valle vicino alla cappella di Santa Rosalia, la rivolta freme su uno squallido palco arredato in stile Ikea.Cantanti di prim'ordine, alcuni anche bravi a recitare (tra i tanti, Renée Fleming, Placido Domingo, Bryn Terfel).Direttori illustri: Antonio Pappano, Jesus Lopez-Cobos, Valery Gergiev, Riccardo Chailly.Per l'altissimo livello medio di cantanti direttori e orchestre, per l'interessante varietà dei tipi di interpretazione registica, tutti però (tranne i "Vespri siciliani") fedeli al libretto, per il prezzo conveniente, è un cofanetto ideale per un primo approccio a un grandissimo uomo di teatro italiano.
