The history of pi, says the author, though a small part of the history of mathematics, is nevertheless a mirror of the history of man. Petr Beckmann holds up this mirror, giving the background of the times when pi made progress -- and also when it did not, because science was being stifled by militarism or religious fanaticism. Review: Wonderful book for math lovers. - Wonderful book for math lovers. Review: Not for Laymen - The book began with stories. That made me feel confident that if not solving the mysteries of the Universe, it would allow me to appreciate the beauty of pi— like Carl Sagan's 'Contact' had done. Alas! Soon it became a book of mathematics, by a mathematician, for the mathematicians. Gradually it became utterly incomprehensible, with all the integrals and polynomials. I felt like falling into an endless hole lined with numbers. If you want to feel that way, be my guest. Otherwise, you have been warned.

Great content. Average quality print.
Awesome Awesome book. There are heaps of diagrams and incredibly in-depth information on pi. You can find proofs, and stories about historical figures throughout. While the description does say that the book is flexible enough for anyone to read (it is), you'll probably want to be familiar with some mathematical concepts before jumping in. This is mainly so that you can grasp some of the formulas present throughout. It was first published in 1971 and it looks as though not much has changed with the design of the book. It is in an older, less modern style, but that gives it so much charm. However the language is easy enough to follow. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Excelente
