Dowsing

I couldn't put it down!!! Has some practical how-to information, but it's definitely not a how-to book.
As a child I used a crystal pendulum to find lost things. My parents often used muscle testing when deciding a between homeopathics or tictures, and as an adult knew of farmers and other "regular" people who would hire dowsers to find water, minerals or othernatural resources on their property. I never knew that these weren't mainstream practices until I was an adult. Recently I became interested in developing my skills with the pendulum (to find lost things, usually). I bought this book to take with me on vacation, having only read a sample. The book talks some about pendulum dowsing and muscle testing, but practically speaking it mainly instructs on mostly on using L Rods (like they use to find water or minerals), which was fine with me since I don't have as much knowledge or first hand experience using those. The book focuses a lot on the historical, religious and socio-political context of dowsing, and how these factors have kept or promoted dowsing as a practical and useful tool - or openly practiced professional calling. This is a really well researched and written book that was fascinating and easy to read. It's an important book to help get a better understanding of the religious, historical and scientific background and effects on the perception and practice of dowsing. There is some practical how-to dowse information, but it's definitely not a how-to book. It dispells a lot of the "mystical" and "occult" narratives connected to dowsing, and really puts it in the realms of the scientific. It doesn't focus on the larger question of IF dowsing works, but on the HOW it works, from an energetic and scientific point of view. It's a must-have book for anyone who dowses, has hired a professional, dowser or is interested in learning about how to use dowsing as a tool. I literally couldn't put this book down- it was especially fascinating to learn about how dowsing was invested in as a science, and used for information gathering during the cold war, first in the Soviet Union, and then in response by the United States.I did use some of the tips as I practiced (like grounding myself, how to frame questions clearly, etc.). I am pretty new at using the pendulum for others (with confidence), but while reading the book gave it a try and actually successfully used it to to help someone locate something that her family member had hidden generations before- under a kitchen tile!

An Absolute Must-Read for the Serious Aspiring Student of Dowsing
Ms Brown early on in her book, Dowsing: The Ultimate Guide for the 21st Century, sketches what amounts to a world history of dowsing, incorporating her perceptive insights concerning that history's dynamics. I've never encountered such a wonderful, revealing discussion of the roots of dowsing anywhere else. And to my mind this type of historical perspective is essential background material for anyone involved with the art of dowsing. I don't think it's too much praise to state that this history, as the author has articulated it, is a unique gift to the entire world-wide dowsing community. The author does spend pages on discussions of energy, scientific outlook, and cutting-edge physics as these relate to and support the reality of the dowsing response. I had read most of this sort of info in various places before so was a tad bored with it and fast-forwarded through it. However, this material could certainly be of value to someone who hasn't encountered it elsewhere and needs a mental boost in confidence as regards the reality of dowsing. However, for myself as a new dowser, the highlight of this book is the way the author offers concrete couching tips to assist the beginner in first locating, and subsequently developing a viable relationship with, one's own personal dowsing response. This is just simply priceless information, no two ways about it. I mean, there are other dowsing books that offer some of this, but not in the way Ms Brown does. I'm beginning to suspect her basic tips regarding finding a way into this skill may very well be the reason I am already starting to tap into this ability, instead of miserably failing at it as I did when I first attempted to learn dowsing some years ago.On the strength of one quite dismal and dismissive review of this book on Amazon, I almost didn't buy the book. All I can say is, I'm glad I disregarded that review and purchased the book on Kindle.

Not for me at first - then a surprise.
A bit disappointing in places to be honest. The author makes plenty of claims relating to how the scientific community is starting to embrace dowsing but fails to provide any references. The so called experts fail the slightest scrutiny, Are doctors real doctors or have they just bought their qualifications online? ...and so on.Now, the funny thing is that I lost my keys the other day. Could I follow Elizabeth Brown's techniques to find them? I know that if I use dowsing rods I get a reaction to certain things and places - but could it help me. Ermm... I'm surprised to say yes and very quickly! :-oOf course I may just have tapped into my hidden memories, but those dowsing rods took me straight to them. Weird! I still don't like the references to the pseudo-scientists and their publications but, well, it seemed to work... I'm a wee bit perturbed but not in an unpleasant way.

Insightful, witty and inspiring - a must read!!
Insightful, witty and inspiring, the dowsing world owes Elizabeth a great debt for writing this book - it is, simply put, groundbreaking. The book's mission is clear from the outset, seeking to strip away the general ignorance surrounding this subject, which is growing ever more popular. As the author clearly states right from the beginning, "[Dowsing] is unfairly handicapped by ignorance, supposition and superstition, the assumption of what it might be rather than the understanding of what it actually is."As well as sharing her many years of professional experience, and highlighting many stories of tremendous importance, the author brings together exciting breakthroughs in the field of quantum science that point to why dowsing often does (and sometimes doesn't) work. Balanced in its approach, The Ultimate Guide for the 21st Century will fascinate experts and beginners alike - and I dare say you won't want to put it down once you start reading it. I know I couldn't!If you're a beginner to dowsing, however, you should note the book will not give you the necessary step-by-step guidance to become a proficient dowser. And I don't believe that Elizabeth meant for it to serve as a "how to" guide. It does, however, give all dowsers food for thought and points out common pitfalls to avoid when starting out.Part IV: Dowsing for Health and Well-being is extremely relevant for today's increasingly chaotic world, where conventional approaches are typically failing the public more and more. One rule certainly does not suit all. And, in Part V: Dowsing for Life, a favourite chapter of mine is Chapter 19: Unquestionable Benefits, where Elizabeth works to identify the causative, contributory and trigger factors behind her client's onset of cancer. All in all, a fantastic book that will stimulate minds and hearts for years to come - and, by the way, it is currently only 99p on Kindle, so this was a ridiculously cheap price. This delightful book goes on my collection of all-time favourite reads, along with books such as Conversations with God (by N D Walsch), and The Biology of Belief (by Bruce Lipton).

Excellent introduction to dowsing
It's very good if you want to learn to dowse, although she spends a lot of time trying to scientifically validate dowsing, which at times became a bit hard to grasp and a bit difficult to understand. Surely if you are buying the book you are already open to or interested in dowsing? The other small niggle was her fondness for using dowsing for EVERYTHING, even going so far as to ask if the left overs in the fridge were still safe to eat. It's only a small niggle, and only really for myself. But other than that the book is a brilliant introduction into dowsing.

Absolutely excellent!
This book is very well-written - a really enjoyable read! And absolutely chock-full of useful, thought-provoking information (it's quite information-dense for it size! - but in a clear, easy to understand way for a complete newbie like me) that is, as the title says, completely relevant for the 21st Century. It covers so many areas of dowsing, and 'the evidence so far', and answers so many questions I had about the mechanisms of dowsing, clearing up many 'myths' and 'superstitions' and getting down to the practically useful and relevant instructions! I had a consultation with Elizabeth, and can say that it was completely accurate, with no vague or ambiguous answers whatsoever!, but very specific instructions/advice/recommendations which have permanently turned my health around (for the better)!
