A major smart-home upgrade, with better sound and one minor design drawback
I bought my first Echo in April 2015, back when it was simply called the “Amazon Echo.” Eleven years later, it’s still running strong. Since then, we’ve accumulated an Echo for nearly every room in our home. My daughter, who was born the same year as that original Echo, had been relegated to using it in her bedroom. We finally decided it was time for an upgrade. I wanted her to have access to Alexa+ so I could teach her how to use AI appropriately, and we also needed another Matter hub, as her room is tucked away in the corner of our apartment, and the smart shades in there weren’t always responding reliably. Since installing the Echo Dot Max, her room (and our entire smart home) has become noticeably smarter. The Matter-compatible shades now maintain a strong connection. We have them programmed to open every morning to help wake her up and close again in the evening for privacy. The built-in temperature sensor has also been surprisingly useful. It allowed me to create a routine that automatically turns on her otherwise “dumb” air conditioner when the room reaches a certain temperature. We’ve also been using Alexa+ for everyday questions, weather, music, and those random things families find themselves noodling over. I can monitor my daughter’s activity and help make sure she’s using it appropriately. Compared with the old Alexa experience, Alexa+ is a huge leap forward. It understands more natural questions, handles follow-ups, remembers some conversational context, and is far less likely to respond with the dreaded, “According to an Alexa Answers contributor…” For casual home use, it can answer many of the same kinds of questions I would normally ask Claude, which I pay for separately for my business. Prime members also receive access to Alexa+, which makes the Dot Max a much more capable device than the older Echo speakers we own. The sound quality is good. I still prefer the speakers in the original full-size Echo, but the Dot Max sounds much better than the various standard Echo Dots and Echo Shows we’ve owned. For a child’s bedroom, it is more than adequate for music, audiobooks, and general Alexa use. Because Wi-Fi can be spotty in that corner of our apartment, I was also interested in the built-in eero extender capability. It only becomes useful if you already have (or later purchase) a compatible eero router, which I don’t currently own. Still, I’ve been considering switching to eero, and it’s nice to know her room is already somewhat future-proofed if I do. I was also happy to see that the Dot Max comes in Amethyst (purple). The color makes it feel unique without resorting to an overtly childlike design. It looks attractive on her desk and, depending on your frame of reference, resembles either the Death Star, Olympic Stadium in Montreal, or Spaceship Earth at EPCOT. I did run into one strange problem while trying to pair an Amazon Mickey Mouse clock. No matter how many times I tried, the Dot Max wouldn’t recognize it as an Amazon gadget. I eventually paired the clock with my original Echo, left it connected for a while, and then tried pairing it with the Dot Max again. Somehow, that worked. I’m not sure whether the clock received a firmware update or whether it was simply dumb luck, but it has remained connected since then. My other complaint is the placement of the indicator light. On several older Echo devices, the light is on top, where it can be seen from almost any angle. Here, it faces forward. Unless Alexa gives an audible response, it can be difficult to tell whether she heard you when you’re standing behind or beside the device. Those are relatively minor inconveniences, though. Overall, we love the Echo Dot Max. It has improved the reliability of our smart-home devices, added useful automation through the temperature sensor, and given my daughter a much better Alexa experience. It has assimilated quite nicely into our growing family of Echo devices. Its great-grandfather, meanwhile, has been reassigned to the bathroom.

Thoroughly Impressed
I purchased two Echo Dot Max speakers with stands. One for the upstairs and one for the downstairs. I already installed Amazon Basic Smart LED Light Bulbs in the living room and upstairs bedroom. Having already set up the Alexa App on my phone with WIFI connections, the Echo Dots took less than 3 minutes to set up. The automatically synced with my Alex App, downloaded a firmware update, and were ready to go once I grouped them according to their location in my home; one for the living room and one for the main bedroom. I didn't have to input WIFI names and passwords, the whole set up process was extremely easy and seamless. The Echo Dots once assigned to their group location and their microphones enabled, easily controlled my lights in the upstairs bedroom and downstairs living room just by giving the Echo Dots a command: "Alexa, turn on the lights in the bedroom" or "Alexa turn on the lights in the living room". Any command I would give to the App on my phone the Echo Dots commensurately responded to. I then linked my Pandora account to the Echo Dots which was super easy to do on the App and now the little Echo Dots can play any station or music I chose on Pandora. Have to say I am thoroughly impressed with the technology. Yes they are a bit pricey but well worth it because of all the features they have and they sound fantastic too. They look great on my bed stand and living room end table. I don't know how I got along without them. I will probably buy a third Echo Dot for my other upstairs guest bedroom. No wonder Amazon is as big as they are. It's an incredible company providing goods and services that everyone can thoroughly enjoy. UPDATE: I purchased the third Echo Dot Max for my guest bedroom. One note: I had difficulty connecting the WIFI due to the remoteness of the guest bedroom. The problem I had when setting up in the upstairs bedroom, was that the Alexa App prompted me to input the WIFI password which I did but it wouldn't recognize it and asked for me to input it again. I did this four times when I decided to take the Echo Dot Max and the Lamps downstairs into the same room as the WIFI router and the problem went away. The setup proceeded without any issues bypassing the need to input the WIFI Password. I took the lamps and the Echo Dot Max back upstairs and the system works. The Echo Dot easily recognized three smart bulbs turning them on and off with a spoken Alexa command. Also streams Pandora like the other Echo Dots.

Small Size, Big Sound—I’m Extremely Impressed!
Last year I purchased an Echo Dot, and unfortunately it eventually stopped working. It would sometimes come on by itself and even start talking when no one had said a word. Thankfully, I had purchased the protection plan, and replacing it was quick and easy. I highly recommend adding the protection plan when you buy electronics—you never know when you might need it. My replacement is the new Echo Dot Max, and I couldn’t be happier. It’s surprisingly compact, but don’t let its size fool you. The sound is outstanding! It’s much louder than I expected, the bass is rich and clear, and the overall audio quality is excellent. I use it every day for weather updates, news, reminders, timers, music, and answering quick questions. It’s become one of those devices I didn’t realize I depended on until I had it. For such a small speaker, it delivers an impressive performance and is an excellent value. I’m genuinely impressed with this little Echo Dot Max and would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a smart speaker with great sound in a compact package.

I wish I had bought Alexa years ago!
I was stubborn and almost gave up, but I'm glad I stuck with it. Once you get past the frustrating setup, the volume is great, the interface is easy to navigate, and the features are nice. Music playback sounds good, though I'm still exploring everything it can do. - Update I was so ready to send her back at first! But after I figured out how to get it together—she actually told me herself how to do it—I decided to keep her.She works great and gets right to the point. She can be a little sassy sometimes, but she is a wonderful little thing. She is perfect for waking me up, telling me the weather, and giving me the time. That alone is worth the money to me.I also love that she can turn the lights on and off. It is going to make Christmas time so much easier since I can just say "turn on the lights" instead of going outside in the cold! This little device can even talk to me 1200 feet away that shocked me.

Big Sound, Small Footprint—A Fantastic Smart Speaker Upgrade
If you are looking to upgrade your smart home audio without cluttering your counters, the Amazon Echo Dot Max hits the absolute sweet spot. It takes everything convenient about the compact Dot series and packs in a massive audio punch that completely changes the game for small-to-medium-sized rooms. Why It’s a Great Addition to Your Home:Incredible Sound Upgrade: The "Max" moniker is well-earned here. The audio profile is night and day compared to older Echo models. It delivers surprisingly deep bass, rich mid-tones, and crystal-clear highs. Whether you are listening to a podcast or streaming music, it fills the room effortlessly.Sleek, Modern Design: The compact design looks incredibly sharp on a desk, nightstand, or kitchen counter. It blends right into your decor while still offering a clear, easy-to-read LED display for the time, weather, and song titles.Fast, Responsive Processing: Thanks to the upgraded internal processor, Alexa responds to smart home commands (like turning on lights or adjusting the thermostat) noticeably faster than previous generations. The One Caveat:Microphone Sensitivity Could Be Better: If there is one minor downside to the "Max" hardware, it’s that the microphone array seems a bit weak compared to the booming speakers. If you have music playing at a higher volume or if you are speaking from across a noisy room, you might have to raise your voice or repeat yourself once or twice to get Alexa’s attention.Performance at a Glance:FeatureMy Rating Note Audio Quality⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Deep bass and clear vocals; punches above its weight Smart Home Speed⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Lightning-fast processing for routine commands Design & Display⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Sleek look with a highly useful LED interface Mic Sensitivity⭐⭐⭐☆☆Requires a bit more effort to wake in loud rooms Bottom Line: Despite needing to speak up occasionally when the room gets loud, the Echo Dot Max is a stellar device. The massive upgrade in sound quality more than makes up for the slightly weaker mic. If you want a compact speaker that actually sounds excellent for music, this is a fantastic buy!

Enjoyable Speaker!
I just replaced a tall Echo Dot with the Echo Dot Max. I am very happy with this speaker. The heavier bass really improves listening to music. I am not a music listening aficionado but the difference in sound of the type of music I play was clearly better on the Echo Max over the older Echo Dot. Setup was a breeze and took less than 3 minutes. Those that complain about setup were trying to setup smart accessories. Mine was just replacing an existing Echo. You can also do a pre-delivery setup that makes it even easier. One negative is the fact that the light ring is at the front at an angle. It is not as bright or as easy to see when you receive a notification. This is not a deal breaker for me.

Nice Product, Decent Sound, Alexa Plus Needs Improvement
This is the first Echo product I purchased. While I find it useful to have Alexa control my lights with my voice commands and being able to have AI available to ask questions any time one pops up, the product has pros and cons. On the Pro side, the sound is good, not mind blowing, but good. There is definitely room for improvement. Also, I do like that there is a button on the device that allows me to mute the mic on the device whenever I wish to. Setup was pretty easy. Also, it has a built in temperature gauge, allowing you to ask Alexa what the temperature is inside the house. On the Con side, Alexa Plus that is included with the Echo Dot Max, can be wonky. Sometimes giving me erroneous information and when I challenge it and say that the information was erroneous, it responds back with an apologetic voice. The problem is I tell it what mistake it made, it states that it corrected itself for future use. Yet, it will repeat prior errors again. I’ve told it how to pronounce something, it states it correctly, then mispronounces the same thing again in the future. It also glitches at times, where I’ve had to unplug it to reboot.

Product Is Excellent — Purchasing Process Was Needlessly Difficult
Product Review: The Echo Dot Max itself is excellent. The sound quality is impressive for its size, functionality is solid, and Alexa performs exactly as expected. Once everything was set up, the device worked great and feels well designed. I genuinely enjoy the product and look forward to continuing to use Alexa devices in the future. PURCHASING & CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE (Important Context): I want to provide context around the purchasing process, as it required a significant amount of time, persistence, and unnecessary stress. I originally attempted to purchase two older versions of this product (used). After multiple payment processing issues, I was forced to cancel and attempt to repurchase, at which point the items disappeared entirely and could not be located. After contacting customer service, I was told that no new or used stock of those models remained. After the representative spoke with a supervisor, I was offered a price-match arrangement on the newest model instead. I received an email confirming this offer and was instructed to complete the full-price purchase and then call back to receive reimbursement of the price difference. I followed those instructions exactly. When I called back, I was told by another agent and supervisor that the reimbursement could not be processed until the item was delivered. I waited, received the device, and called again. At that point, despite prior confirmations (now involving multiple frontline agents and supervisors), I encountered repeated resistance to honoring the agreement. The call turned into hours of back-and-forth, during which I was repeatedly told the reimbursement could not be done, despite written confirmation stating otherwise. During this process, I was repeatedly encouraged to end the call without resolution or to be transferred to the Echo/Alexa specialist team, with the suggestion that they had authority over the purchase. This created additional DELAYS & DEFLECTION, even though the issue was not related to product functionality but to a previously confirmed purchase arrangement. The situation became EXTREMELY STRESSFUL, as the purchase required funds I had set aside for essential insurance payments, and an NSF would have resulted in penalties I could not afford. The prolonged uncertainty was disheartening, especially after relying on information that had been repeatedly confirmed. After several hours of persistence and refusing to allow the issue to be dismissed or deferred further, the agreement was finally honored and the matter was resolved. Additional Observation: After everything was resolved, the original models I was told were unavailable suddenly appeared back in stock. I was then able to purchase the two used devices (used) as I originally wanted at the reasonable price they were still listed as. FINAL THOUGHTS: The product itself is outstanding, and I’m very happy with the Echo Dot Max and the additional Echo devices I later purchased. My hope in sharing this experience is simply that internal communication and consistency improve, so customers are not placed under unnecessary financial stress after relying on confirmed information. Despite the ordeal, I remain a satisfied Alexa user and appreciate the final resolution to some respect. But, overall, it does NOT MAKE up for, nor compensate for the Uneeded, undue TIME & STRESS endured, especially after I had mentioned my current Ongoing HEALTH Related Battle. My Opinion: While the product itself is excellent, this experience showed me how difficult it can be for individual customers to resolve issues when information is inconsistent across multiple representatives.

Highly recommend these things!!
Sounds insanely good for how small it is. I had to ask Alexa to turn off the bass because I am in an apartment and I am paranoid. Sometimes I like to have conversations with it, and I am often playing music on it. I wish it would default to Spotify though, perhaps I can do that somehow though. This thing is really cool, would be cool to have a whole house with one in each room haha. Also the purple looks really nice!
