Does this router in a table really eliminate the need for a lift or is a lift like the Kreg or others still a better system?

The router absolutely eliminates the need for a lift. That's one of the main reasons I bought this, when replacing an old worn out router. I wanted to mount the router in a table but I didn't want to buy an expensive lift system. I was also skeptical of the claims made by this unit so I researched a lot. Some online videos helped show how the lift mechanism works and how to install the router in a table. My research showed that 1) this router delivered on its promise and 2) very few routers worked as well below and above the table as this one. To make my table, I also ordered Kreg PRS4034 (Router table insert predrilled for Triton) and Kreg PRS3040 (Router table insert levelers). I used phenolic baltic birch plywood as the base. I mounted Peachtree's "Anodized Aluminum Combination Miter T Track/Mini T Track Rail (32 Inch)" to the left of the table insert. I replaced the left wing of my table saw with the finished base. With all this in place, it's child's play to raise and lower the router completely from ABOVE the table. This is done by using an included tool that reaches through a hole in the table insert and mates with a special fitting on the router. The tool has a handle that lets you turn the fitting and that raises and lowers the unit. Also, the tool allows you to change bits without reaching under the table - what a relief - and it's done with only one tool. You can find cheaper routers than this but I feel this unit's superior features and sturdy built makes it as good a value as you'll find. There is a heftier version of this unit but for the weekend warrior, this will work great.

Just tried to use the Triton my 1/2 inch collet when wide open will not quite accept a 1/2 inch bit. Any suggestions?

When I open the 1/2" collet on my Triton, it hits a spot where turning the collet gets tight, and the 1/2 shank of a bit doesn't fit. At that point, I use the wrench to get through the tightness, and then the collet opens further, and accepts the bit. I don't know if it's supposed to work this way, but that's been my experience.

How difficult should it be to press that orange button in? Just got mine and it generally sticks - hard to push in...even harder to get to to reset o

Mine takes a bit of effort. I usually have to put a little down pressure with my other hand because the spring fights against the button. Or locking the plunge base can help. The gears on the rack and pinion have to line up right. It took me awhile to get comfortable with it.
