I have only started reading it but it is such an amazing book. Glad to have come across it but sad that it took a while.

Do not read if you are feeling depressed
This book is beautifully written. It is, in many ways, a work of art. The writing is exquisite BUT (and this is a big but) this has to be the most utterly depressing book I have ever read in my life. The relentless, continuous, desperate essays on life’s total lack of purpose and meaning conveyed (in very beautiful and descriptive terms) by the author (Pessoa’s heteronym Bernardo Soares) are absolutely soul destroying. You want to shake the author by the shoulders and shout at him to get a grip on himself and either move out, move on, do something, ANYTHING, but stop stop stop moaning, complaining, with chapter after chapter after chapter of repetitive meditations on the complete futility of all life. Of all existence. A man just wishing he would die as soon as possible every single day of his life.Being of a sensitive nature I could take no more mid-book and wanted to burn the copy I had purchased. Never in my life have I ever read anything so soul destroying and depressing. If you are not feeling strong and happy, and if you are of a sensitive nature, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK. I hesitated about giving only one star (especially given the other high reviews and the outstanding quality of the writing and of the author’s very high standing in high literary rankings) but, in my humble view, life is hard and painful enough without having to endure these kind of hopeless, helpless, musings. I want to love life, enjoy every moment of life, dance and sing and be grateful for every moment of it. This book tried to drag me down into a very, very dark place that no one should see, hear about or go to - hence the 1 star. I cannot really forgive Pessoa for having written it and I hope that he never intended it to be published for if there is an afterlife, I suspect he will be feeling rather ashamed. This is my humble and personal view. I fully respect, of course, the view of others who are certainly more culturally educated than I.

Posthumous Portuguese literary hero!
Amazing nuggets of wisdom and observation on the human condition. Not as depressing as the title would have you believe. Great story behind the writer too.Total gem. Dip in and out as you please.
