Great Resource!
I vowed this year to begin a read aloud in my pull-out GT classroom. Too many years have gone by where I just fail at doing so because I only meet with my 3rd and 4th graders once a week. Looking up recommended chapter books for gifted students, I stumbled across this. No, it's not what I wanted, but am I glad it's what I tried.Used more as a shared reading experience, I'm telling you, my GTs absolutely love this book! They cheer when it's time for me to read it. I love seeing them become confident and relieved when the author reveals something they feel--something they may feel ashamed, wrong, or alone in feeling. One student said she likes how this book answers questions that she's had--no one ever talked to her about why she was in a GT program and what it really means to be GT.I think this should be read to GT students to engage in discussion. When we do turn and talks, boy do the kids pour their hearts out! I also think parents should read it to get a perspective of what their child may be feeling.

Perfect Book for Teaching Gifted Kids about Self-Advocacy
I was a gifted teacher (just went back to bio this year) and used this book with all of my new students to talk about self-advocacy. It really helped them understand that the things they think make them “weird” are a normal part of who they are. I got great reviews from my parents on this book too. It helps parents know what to talk about with their gifted kiddos.

Great help in understanding gifted students
I'm enjoying going through certain parts of this book with a small group of 2nd graders in my school who know they're different from other students but can't quite express how or why. The author does a good job explaining what it means to be gifted/talented, how the brain works, different ways that we can be gifted, and lots of other concerns & issues related to being gifted. The book is broken down into chapters that can be read in order or chosen by interest or need. It includes quotes from lots of children in an effort to be relatable to the children who might be reading the book, and it also includes little quizzes and fun facts for the children to help make it specific. As an adult reading the book with the students, it helps me to identify their plight, their occasional difficulty in relating to others, and their (at times) frustration in being labeled.

For students in traditional classroom settings, not home-educated students.
This book is geared specifically for students of gifted and talented programs in traditional classroom settings. My son is gifted, but he is also home-educated, which rendered much of the book inapplicable to his situation. The cover and description of this book should include that the book is geared towards children in traditional school settings, rather than leaving it open to interpretation. I suppose if I had to rewrite the title it would be, "The Survival Guide for Students in Gifted and Talented Programs". Not too catchy, I know. But it's accurate.

Not what I was hoping for
I was optimistic that this book would inspire and reassure my son. We have been reading it together and I find it to be boring, and loaded with excess information that seems secondary and not the sort of reassuring, inviting and inspiring book I'd hoped for to bring him comfort and understanding without exacerbating his differences. There were some good moments, and things to mull over, categories, breakdowns, weigh ins from real kids, so I give it 3 stars. I'm not sure it addresses the self-esteem emotional issues enough or in the way I'd hoped for. There were a lot of "facts" and even some educational stuff. It was okay, but I think I was hoping for a different book.

It was really good, but alot did not apply to as he doesnt have siblings and he is schooled at home. So doesnt have alot of same issues. But for others in public school and with a larger family, it is excellent!
