The American Heritage Desk Dictionary, Fifth Edition Hardcover – September 4, 2012

My granddaughter needed a dictionary on her school supplies list for the 4th grade. This one was the perfect size, not too big or small and easily read. I would recommend

The desk size edition of the AHD5 is the exact same content as the mass-market paperback, except with larger pages, thicker paper, larger type, and a hard cover. It does not have the color printing and color photographs of the full size edition, or any of the ancillary materials, Compared to the mass-market paperback, it's easier to read and lies open flat, but you wouldn't want to carry it around with you. For serious users, it is not suitable as an "only" dictionary, but it is the one I reach for most often. Of my fourth edition copies of the AHD, the one that is most well-used is the trade paperback sized edition. I think this desk edition will fulfill that role for me.

This is a fine dictionary, but what I really need is a CD/DVD version compatible with Windows 8. So far it's not available. I thoroughly enjoyed using the version of it for previous Windows systems and relied on it heavily for its downloaded presence on the computer, but that went out the window (pun intended) when that computer died and I had to settle for a Windows 8 PC. This print version leaves out the enjoyment of archaic words, expanded etymological and usage details and the thesaurus that were present in the old CD that for me, did it all. There is a free American Heritage Dictionary site on the web that I use more often than the print version, but it has the same shortcomings. If/when AH produces a Win8 CD comparable to the previous one I will jump on it!

The dictionaries arrived in perfect condition and ahead of time. I bought these for my children. I have used my American Heritage dictionary for decades, and wanted my children to benefit from this publisher.

I teach correspondence courses. My students are primarily high school graduates. This dictionary is a good fit for them. They don’t have to spend time defining words within words.

Great.....I try to keep a dictionary in every room in this house where there is a pile of books,,,or a shelf of books. This is the book,,,that my friend,,,a college librarian,,,told me one time.,,,that he could support his family by selling this book door to door; convinced me. I have five copies...

I'm looking for a particular American Heritage Dictionary. I've owned it before, lost it and am currently looking to replace it. Let me describe something about said dictionary in hopes that you might be able to help locate it for me.In said dictionary, if you were to look up the word "blatant" or "fragrant" you would either be given a "usage note" or be directed to the other word's "usage note". There the "usage note" would describe the difference twixt the two words. I found this to be very useful.And I'm not talking only about "blatant" and "fragrant". Other words would also have this feature. Like "affect" and "effect". If you can be of any assistance it will be greatly appreciated.Thank you.Alan [email protected]

マスマーケット版と同内容です。字が大きく読みやすいです。マスマーケット版の、綴じ目から頁が外れてくるという致命的欠陥もありません。今月上旬にマスマーケット版を買って字が小さすぎ、自宅で夜寛ぎながら引くには不適切だと思ったので、この机上版を買いました。眼は楽なのですが、判型が大きいので、ついもっと語数があるような錯覚を持ってしまい、この辞書では対応できないような本を読みながら引いて、失望するという、妙な経験をしました。一般の雑誌やニュース記事を読むのにギリギリ足りるかどうかという語数です。もうちょっと語数が多いといいのですが、ないものねだりですね。マスマーケット版には情報が凝縮されているという嬉しい気持ちがあったので、私だけかもしれませんが、人間の感覚って勝手なものだと思いました。
