One of my go to references for pastel work throughout history. All types of pastel works are presented from very loose gestures to extremely tight and detailed works.

I was very pleased with my purchase of this beautiful book. The photographs of the work of these gifted artists are a pleasure to see and enjoy. This book will make a prized addition to my art library.

Gorgeously illustrated, brief survey of works by different artists who excel in this medium. It was disappointing to see that majority of artworks included here are representational, with a heavy focus on realism. I commend the art technique but the subject matters are far from exciting. Peter Seltzer's not-so-still lifes, Frederick D. Somers' abstracted nature, Desmond O'Hagan's impressionistic approach, Daud Ahkriev absolutely stunning figure drawings and the work by master artist Daniel E. Greene stood out for me but the rest were a blur of more of the same. However, while I am glad that books like these are made, the most sought out art will always be in oil painting medium, acrylic, watercolor followed by the rest because of longevity which brings me to my complaint - no oil pastel artwork. You can draw/paint on paper, canvas, board and it will exceed in longevity when compared to soft/dry pastels. I wish that North Light Books publish this type of book but on oil pastel.

Si alguna vez ha pintado con pasteles o tal vez solo esté pensando en usar pasteles. . . realmente deberías consultar este libro. Una variedad tan amplia de estilos, desde paisajes hasta naturalezas muertas y retratos. Obras contemporáneas asombrosas, cada pintura que fue seleccionada es digna de ser incluida. Edición impecable, diseñada pensando en el artista. Es un libro de arte que vale la pena agregar a tu colección. Muy recomendable.

Ich habe vor vielen Jahren mit Pastellkreiden gemalt (oder gezeichnet - ist ja irgendwie ein Zwischending). Das war nach Bleistift und Kohle quasi meine farbliche Einstiegsdroge. Mittlerweile bin ich mehr auf Aquarell und Öl, nachdem ein kurzer Exkurs in Acryl zeigte, dass diese (meiner Empfindung nach) "Plastikfarben" nichts für mich sind. Pastellkreiden (auch Ölpastell und wasservermalbare Pastellkreiden) sind dadurch aus meinem Blickfeld geraten - auch, weil ich sie immer einen Tick zu "bunt" und zu farbintensiv empfand und leider viele Werke in Pastell genau das bestätigen und eine ausgeprägte Tendenz zum Kitsch zeigen.Schon länger aber keimt in mir der Verdacht auf, dass ich dem Medium an sich mit diesem Urteil unrecht tue und ihm eine neue Chance geben sollte. Dieses Buch bestätigt diesen Verdacht voll und ganz!Herzlichen Dank für diese hervorragende Auswahl an modernen Werken, die zeigen, was mit diesem Medium möglich ist. Für mich sind das wertvolle neue Impulse und Inspirationen, die mich sicher bald wieder meine Holzkisten, gefüllt mit diesen herrlich reinen und unschlagbar praktischen Pigmenten, ausgraben lassen. Gerade plein air ist es doch wunderbar entspannend, weder Wasser noch Lösungsmittel etc. mitschleppen zu müssen - einfach nur Farbe. Bin wieder neugierig geworden auf Pastell - Danke.
