For the practicing student
This book is very good for the practicing choy li fut student. It will help you memorize the names of each move and their order. It also gives a good background to the school/study. I would not recommend it for an individual who is not already enrolled in choy li fut. It is a class supplement, not to be used without the help of a teacher.

YOu Cant learn From Books !!!!! Well I did and so can you
I laugh at the people who gave this book low reviewsas a person who successfully got to the intermediate level of kung fu soley through books andregular sparring with experienced brown beltsfrom various karate schoolsproven by the late great Sifu KEnny Gong hsing i master from ny china town 251 Centre st questioning who taught me my skillshe practically called me a liar when I told him from books.convo went like thisSifu who taught you choy lay futme I learned from booksSifu: you cant learn from booksme : well I didSifu: no you cant learnMe can I show you a form?Sifu : go aheadMe: executed a choy lay fut form I learned from chan kin manTsai lee fo chia plum blossom boxing (right hand only)sifu : who was your teacher?Me I told you I learned from booksSifu Then you must be very cleverlater during Training with Sifu Gong he would often comment that true skill in the internalrequires tan tui training. ( I never did tan tui) but five wheel stance is very very similar.hmmmmmmmmmmmmmAlthough I agree that mastery is highly unlikely with only booksgreat skill can be achieved with the right focus and attention to DETAILSand following the correct practice methodsdont reinvent the wheel if the book saysthat a thing was taught one move per weekthen learn it one move per week.Bottom line i had 119 booksthis one was among the most usefulas it gave me a basic form that dramatically strengthened my legsand gave me the correct posture to deliver punches to both middle and lower basinwhy 119 some taught mechanics some taught basics some taught stretching some taught kicking some taught punchingsome taught attitude some taught fighting some taught conditioning some taught how to heal injuriesif you get a book like thisit is for the form only? and of course the history of CLFfor the rest you need to trainthe basics the best way is to enroll in a school and take note of how they train the basicsbasics and repetition are the key to masterybetter to learn two punches and learn how those two punches can both be used to defend as well as attackthen to learn 20 punches and lack any skillI had 4 different drills I did which includeed800 kicks per day100 pushups 4 different variationswooden dummy training bag workthrowiing 1000 punches with light weights 2-10 pounds or no weights at all.forms practice plum blossom, five wheel fist and stance, pai mo quan , koa da quan.and stretch routines that lasted as long as 3 hoursnow called yin yoga lol but it was monkey stretching in the 80'sand of course choy li fut formsnow I study hsing i and pakua from qualified instructors anddo not regret a moment working with this bookwhich still serves me wellas a return to basics leg training toolfinal noteif you go on youtubeyou will not see people executing the kick on the outside of the elbowas Doc Fai wong does in the bookI can attest that this is an important detailhence the reason looking at a real grand master is importantwithout the elbow on the inside of the kicking legyou are missing the power of the qua or pelvis powera very important component for the later training in the internals.

Find a good teacher and get this book
I purchased this book while studying CLF (got it signed by Grand Master Wong, too!). I found it to be a valuable study aid, though personal instruction is ESSENTIAL to maximizing the benefits to be gleaned from these pages. Find a good teacher and get this book. Prepare to sweat!

A fun bit of history.
If you are buying this book to learn Choy Li Fut, don't. If you are buying this book to learn interesting facts about the history and style of Choy Li Fut then go ahead. There are no advanced secrets, much less basics, but since so little is published about this great martial art, its better than nothing. Kinda fun to read if you are just about to start Choy Li Fut, but most of its history is online now.Save your money and take a class, you'll learn everything in this book in the first month, if not the first week.

Choy Li Fut Kung Fu by Doc Fai Wong
This book gives a great overview of Choy Li Fut Kung Fu! It talks about the lineage and history which I find fascinating. The book also covers ALL the basics which is the true art of Choy Li Fut. As a practitioner I use this as a reference guide on a frequent basis. The book is very elusive and I find a little bit more hidden in these pages each time I pick it up. Laid out before you are the true secrets of the art. To most they don't know what they are reading so they simply glaze over the words. Those are the ones who truly miss out.

A must have for Plum Blossom practicioners.
As previously mentioned this book is not intended to teach you a whole system. It does not follow the Chan Family lineage as well. However, if you do follow Choy Li Fut it does show you all of the basic movements. Obviously it can not compare to receiving actual training and hands-on instruction, but it is a great reference and an excellent guide. Authentic martial arts are passed down from generations with hands on training and with written manuals and scripts. This book is a manual/script! I agree that the photos aren't the best, but look at when this was originally published. It has obviously sold plenty of copies to still be in print.

Good read for the CLF practitioner.
I enjoyed reading this book, it had a good history of choy lee fut and showed some of the techniques as well as forms. The book won't teach you how how to fight but will give you knowledge of the background and a understanding of choy lee fut

Very basic
Basics of this martial art, but you really need a tutor to reap the full benefits. A bit of a waste of maney as far as I'm concerned.
