I use this as a soup BASE, - adding a good amount of carrots, celery, onions, mushrooms and beef (chuck or blade steak). I also add garlic powder, pepper, bay leaf and a couple of shakes of basil and thyme. Using beef stock instead of water seems to give more body to the broth. Bring to boil then simmer on low-med heat for at least 2 hours till veggies and meat are tender. I serve with pumpernickel bread and butter. Delicious!

Add this soup starter to any soup that has vegetables, lentils or mushrooms and you will be happy with the added flavor you will have when you are finished cooking.

I usually add some extra barley and a few seasonings. It takes two hours to be ready, but just simmer and stir periodically and you’ve got a hearty soup. I sometimes add a few sliced-up hot dogs 15 minutes before it’s done. It won’t be kosher that way, but it’s delicious.
