Does this work by pumping the handle up and down or actual twisting like you would a manual screwdriver?

Twist with fingers , not pump. Easy to use.

Would the bits work on pewter models?

I seriously doubt these would work on pewter, at least the smaller bits. I have already seen 2-3 of these smaller bits break with very little use drilling into styrene plastic.
