Grandson birthday
I got this for my 8 year old grandson for his birthday. He had to have some help putting it together, but thought it was really fun to play with.

Great for a 2e 8 year old
My 8 year old put this together himself with no assistance and it’s his first k’nex build. Lots of fun to play with too.

Can't get the tracks to work. Lots of small pieces. Pretty complicated for a 7 year old
This is an okay set. It comes with directions to make three different vehicles all with a motor so they actually move on their own. I thought the set was good--definitely not for anyone below the lower age limit. (So even if you think your three year old is gifted with engineering and building skills, s/he's not that gifted. This is not an appropriate set for her/him. I learned that the hard way. :) ) There are a ton of small pieces and the directions get kind of complicated. My three year old helped by picking out the right colored pieces that I would ask for, but he was definitely not dexterous enough to put the things together (he has K'nex for little kids and is good at it, so I thought he might be able to do this with assistance. I was wrong.)So this set can make three tank like vehicles and of course anything your creativity can come up with, but there are a lot of very small pieces that are easy to lose and the directions for the vehicles they give are pretty complicated. I think a seven year old would probably need assistance, though a twelve year old with enough patience shouldn't have a problem.I knocked it down a couple stars because I just can't get the tracks to work. The motor works fine and the wheels turn without the track (so technically you can make the vehicles go without the tracks, but it doesn't look as cool. I've followed the instructions on making the tracks and installing them and I'm not sure what is catching in the gears--I think the little rubber buttons you put on the pieces, but with the tracks on the gears stall and one of the tracks always breaks. It's very frustrating. I've followed the directions exactly so I'm not sure what the deal is.Anyways, it's a fine set. Definitely have a container ready to put the small pieces in because they are super easy to lose. And definitely don't get this for anyone under the age of seven. :)

Excellent kit, with a couple sticking points. My 8-year-old enjoyed it.
This is an excellent building kit that provided a much needed (and screen free!) diversion for my 8-year-old son yesterday. He asked for my help, but through most of the building process, my only contribution was in opening the plastic bags for him. It was fascinating to watch him work, really. He studied the seemingly small and complicated instructions for each step, lay out the parts he needed, and start building. There were only a few steps that stalled him at all. The first was when he needed get all the large sections together. It required some careful planning and dexterity to reach around / inside and connect the pieces. The instructions could’ve been a little more precise here too, as it wasn’t clear how the section with the topmost set of wheels was supposed to snap into place (the yellow pieces should be rotated so they are flat on top!).The other sticking point was in assembling the tank treads. There are eighteen joint sections that have a flat and circular portion that connects to a small two-arms-with-hooks-at-the-end piece. The circular (thumb-tack-like?) portion has a slot in it that should slide over one of the arm hooks of the other piece. Once we got that figured out—the instructions illustrated it, but it could use another perspective or step to help with this—the rest of the tread was a snap. And seeing the whole tank function was a neat reward for ninety minutes of effort. Really cool for him (and me).All in all, a great kit. My son is on the lower end of the age range, so older kids may not get stuck on the same things he did. (They were head-scratchers for me too, though.) I recommend it!
