Anyone know by chance which lens is ok to use to watch the upcoming solar eclipse? will the lightest lens be safe enough? tia

Here's what NASA had to say:"The only (welding masks) that are safe for direct viewing of the sun with your eyes are those of shade 12 or higher. These are much darker than the filters used for most kinds of welding. If you have an old welder's helmet around the house and are thinking of using it to view the sun, make sure you know the filter's shade number."If the number is less 12, NASA recommends you don't use it. Many people find the sun too bright even at shade 12 filter, while others find it too dim at Shade 14, but shade 13 filters can be difficult to find."

Will a shade 12 plus a shade 5 lens be safe for viewing the sun

I read that two eights will give you a 15 and an eight and a nine will give you a 16. By those rules a 12 + 5 might give you a 16. I also read that a fourteen was the minimum, but I do not like minimums. Even if you have a 16, it says not to look for more than three minutes. I am not looking or letting the people I love me look for more than 10 seconds at a time. I have looked at an eclipse that was more than 50% and it was really painfully bright even through a 16. Forney was not on the approved list for certified viewing, but it is certainly reputable and they are not selling glasses. I do have two Forney 8s and I may use them for my camera. Be careful whatever you decide to do. I have a friend with permanent damage from looking at the sun.

Will this fit in a welding hood for 2×4 lenses

I bought this lens to go in a couple of welding helmets I bought in the early 70's. It fits them fine. I have not measured it to see the exact size, but it is the standard small rectangular welding lens that has been in common use for many years.
