Secret to domestic happiness
Field Guide to Domestic Happiness Species: Homo sapiens domesticus Habitat: Suburban living room Observed Behavior: The Atmospheric Incident In quiet homes across the world, a curious biological phenomenon occurs. A member of the household, believing themselves alone and unnoticed, releases what scientists politely call a modest but fragrant atmospheric disturbance, also known as a methane bloom. It is often accompanied by two defining characteristics: • a small but decisive sound • a rapid expansion of odor into the surrounding ecosystem The human assumes the event will quietly dissipate into the environment, carried away by the gentle currents of indoor air. But the modern home contains a vigilant predator of airborne impurities. The Winix 5510 Air Purifier. Compact and deceptively elegant, the Winix occupies its territory with quiet authority. Beneath its smooth exterior lies a layered defense system: a true HEPA filter to capture microscopic particles, an activated carbon layer to absorb odors, and the curious phenomenon known as PlasmaWave technology, which gently breaks down pollutants drifting through the air. Ever alert, its internal sensors constantly survey the atmosphere of the habitat, measuring subtle changes invisible to the human eye. Within seconds of detecting an atmospheric disturbance, the machine awakens. Fans surge to life. Air rushes through the filters with the urgency of a wildfire response team. A red light ignites like an emergency beacon. The human sits silently, staring at the glowing red bar, realizing two uncomfortable truths: 1. The event was not as discreet as originally believed. 2. The machine has no sense of discretion whatsoever. For several minutes, the Winix continues its noble work, cycling the air and restoring balance to the domestic ecosystem. Eventually the red light fades. The fan slows. The human exhales in relief, convinced the crisis has passed. Harmony has returned to the environment. Across the room, the Winix sits once again in stillness… patiently monitoring the air, waiting for the next disturbance in the ecosystem. The human, having learned nothing, continues to blame the cat. Nature, after all, is a cycle. Final score: Human 0. Winix ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Best Investment We Made!
If you are here, I’d be willing to take a bet that you did your research and saw this air purifier recommended across the internet. I’m here to say, the research you did led you to the right place. TL;DR: Amazing, cut down on airborne pet hair, but a bit loud (when running on high) and may need multiple for a living area. Great value for your money. 5/5 ⭐️ UPSIDES: This air purifier is simply amazing. Me and my wife purchased this due to our two dogs (Husky mix and a Shiba Inu) constantly shedding to the point you could visibly see hair floating through the air. While running one of these in our living room (which exceeds the 360 sq. ft. rating of the purifier) is not the end-all solution to the shedding, it has drastically increased the air quality, and after just 8 hours of running, it decreased amount of hair floating around. I had my doubts as air purifiers don’t particularly work to eliminate pet hair, but this puts in the work to bring it back to a manageable amount. We have identified “hot spots” of where the dog hair tends to conglomerate due to fans and the A/C, and decided to place it in one of those areas. Within a half hour, the air quality was NOTICEABLY cleaner and easier to breathe. Me and my wife would walk in the area of the fan, then go to another room and physically feel the difference in air quality. Around the 8 hour mark I opened the front face and removed a significant amount of pet hair that had been built up on the mesh screen. If you plan on using these to cut down on pet hair, I personally believe it would be beneficial to identify those areas where the hair tends to build up to position your air purifiers. I’m not saying that this has eliminated or even cut down on the amount we have to vacuum and sweep, but it has helped with the floating dust and hair that accumulates in the air. DOWNSIDES: Noise. (Potentially) So if you’re expecting this to be super quiet and unnoticeable, I’m sorry to say this may not be it if you’re running this on turbo. If you only need to run this on a low to high settings to help remove small amounts of particulates from the air, it will be quiet. However, for our pet hair removal needs, we keep it on Turbo, leaving it sound a little louder than any average fan you get from the store. If you are okay with a bit of white noise running in the background, you will be fine. The noise is much quieter (borderline non-existent) when running on sleep mode to high fan, which could be enough based on your needs, but is not enough for us. Rated Area. (Potentially) This fan is rated for a room 360 sq. ft. While that is large enough for most bedrooms, it may not be enough to satisfy a living area, especially if your house is open concept. I would recommend considering investing in two fans for a larger room (but keep in mind how loud the fan is). If you think you need multiple for a single room, consider investing in one to start so you can hear how loud it is, if you like it and want another for a second room and a second for the same room, only get one more and see how well you can manage the noise of two running at the same time in the same room. Air Quality Light: The purifier has a built in light indicator to indicate air quality which is nice, but not super informative, as there is no guide to tell you what it’s measuring or what the measurements are… honestly it could just be a light on a timer schedule for all we know, as the manual only says it indicates air quality in “red (poor), Amber (fair), and Blue (good)” VALUE: If you can continue to find this around $150 dollars (how much I was able to purchase it for), the value for the amount you’re spending is perfect. I will try to update this review when we purchase a second system and have it running in the same room as the first.

Really nice
This has been a surprise. Really good air purifier. I have owned Rabbit Air units at many times the cost of this unit, and aside from the number of filters you can put in it, this one is just as quiet and does a great job. In fact, I like this one better as it is less expensive to keep up with filters being reasonable. Very impressed.

Good deal. Works well.
Had a10 year old winix but needed another. Happy with filters, ease of cleaning. Have 2 Happi expensive air cleaners and will be replacing them. Expensive filters, very difficult to clean, big and bulky. Like winix slender profile and easy to clean.

The seller is lying; this is advertised to come with a remote control, which is why I chose it, and there is no remote control included, and it cannot be connected to an app. BEWARE - Do not recommend buying this if you require remote operation.

I'm very happy with this air purifier. I have a cat and it visibly picks up a lot of hair, that must just be floating around in the air; hair that would normally go unnoticed. I started using a Levoit LV-PUR 131 machine a couple of years ago to remove the smell of vaped marijuana flower (prescribed medical). I love the smell myself, but I know how many don't, and I'm a considerate neighbour. I've had the Winix for 3 months now, and it is far superior to the Levoit model, which has now been demoted to hallway duties. I like the washable pre-filter, although I've not actually had to wash it yet. I find that a good going over with a vacuum once a week, to remove all the large debris, is enough. I vacuum the charcoal filter too. As I've said, my primary reason for using an air purifier was never to remove dust but this is a big bonus, and there is visibly less dust now. The sensor detects VOCs much better than smoke, and for anyone using it for smoke or weed should be aware of this. I just keep it on setting three most of the time, which works very well for cigarette smoke and marijuana vape. Setting 3 on the Winix is quieter than setting 1 on the Levoit. Setting 3 is my "go to" setting. It's really not noisy at all. For smoke, leaving it on "auto" doesn't work, but manually setting it to 3 does. The same is true of marijuana flower vape. The turbo mode (4th speed) is VERY loud but unnecessary for normal use. I occasionally give it a blast, just to clear the air quickly, and it's very effective for this. I have a large living room, and 10 minutes on turbo will just clear anything quickly. The one niggle I have is that when I want to leave it on, as I retire to bed, I have a practical choice of setting 3 for 4 hours, or turbo for an hour - the timer does 1, 4 or 8 hours. It would be more useful for my purposes, if I could choose 1, 2, and 4 hours. Ideally, I'd like to be able to leave it on setting 3 for 2 hours, but that's not possible. I leave the Plasmawave mode on because on or off, I don't notice any difference. People have talked about it making occasional snapping noises, but I've never heard anything. Unbranded filter sets are about 20 quid, so in practice, I change them every two months. Winix say the charcoal filter will last for a lot longer as it is washable, but TBH washing and drying is too much faff for me. Lastly... it LOOKS better than the Levoit, which has turned yellow from UV light, like many white/off-white plastics. I'm very happy with this Winix machine. From research and experience, I now think that it's probably the best in the UK home market, for smoke and vape. [Update: Aug 25] I'm still very happy with the performance. I've discovered that because I've been smoking rollies (tobacco) near the unit, a sticky film develops on the pre-filter. In fact, the surrounding black plastic is also sticky. I think it's nicotine. Anyway, I just laid the filter down in the bath, and went gently over it with some water and a little washing up liquid. This did the trick. Good as new. Another trick I've found is that the carbon filter is exactly half the depth of the Hepa filter, so it is possible to fit three carbon filters, and no Hepa filter. Of course, from the POV of smoke and vape removal, this is not, as one might think, three times the effectiveness, but rather 197% the smoke-reducing power (according to ChatGPT) - something to do with layer passing. That's still almost twice as effective. It doesn't get the fine dust through, that's just blown back into the room. I use this air purifier in the room where I smoke and vape. Just around the corner, in my hallway, I have another Winix with a Hepa filter. That one gets the dust.

I just got this air purifier a few days ago so this review is not about long term use or efficacy. So far I love it. It looks and sounds cool and very modern and more importantly it works well with no smells, no fumes, etc. It's easy to understand and move around with the handle on top. I initially set it on automatic and since the air seemed clean, the fan was staying on slow speed or going in sleep mode (very slow). Since this unit is used in a basement with concrete flooring and 2 cats around with litter, I manually set it on fan speed 3 and leave it there throughout the daytime. On rare occasions the air quality light will turn amber for a few minutes and then turn to blue again so I guess it's doing what it's supposed to do. Even on speed 3, I can hardly hear it. I can look and listen at the TV a few feet from the unit with no problems. The only thing I didn't like was the very lousy manual that comes with it. The writing is ridiculously small. They mention how to clean the screen filter (first one) but not how to clean the carbon one. I went on online to find out. It's pretty simple. I don't care or need the remote but it's there for those who might. I get the feeling most people will lose it anyway. The online reviews seem to agree that this is a great air purifier and so far I really like it. A review mentioned that it was made in Korea. Mine is not. It's made in Thailand according to sticker on the box.
