It has a pretty good tone.
I use it as a percussion instrument. It works. I have not made an exhaustive search for tonalities in washboards.

GREAT FUN
Very nice - lots of fun :-) It has a nice tone and is a perfect size. I had to get some smaller thimbles because my fingers are small - but they are only $1.46 each at Wally-World. I used it for a talent show at church and we had a great time. I would also recommend David Holt's DVD Folk Rhythms, which I also bought on Amazon. I am a musician, but I still got some great tips from it :-)

Perfect for music class
Purchased for preschool music center. Sturdy and well-made. We can’t use the small thimbles that are included (choking hazard) but we provided a variety of items for kids to use to experiment with sound and rhythm.

took 2 weeks longer to arrive than they said it would...
I am not sure if it was the postoffice that delayed the arrival or the company I ordered it from. I got an email stating the musical washboard would arrive on December 20th and it didn't show up. If it hadn't been intended as a Christmas present it would have been less of an issue. I called the company and they said it was at a postoffice a couple hours away from me and I should get it soon. They also said if it didn't show up within 2 weeks to call them back and they would try to figure something out. Luckily the item arrived (although it was more than 2 weeks late) so I didn't have to call again to search for my missing item.

Rhythm instrument + Imaginative Play Toy
Inspired by many viewing of Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas, my daughter desperately wanted her own washboard. It really can be used as a rhythm instrument! I thought she's use it a couple of times, but she plays it every day. I have her count syllables in words, or count the rungs on the washboard & use it to set objects on for math work. At times, she pretends to do old-fashioned "washing" on it, so it's actually a simple, well-crafted toy. I'd recommend this for any preschool and Kindergarten child.

Great pickup instrument
I bought 3 instruments for my adult boys for the holidays, this being one of them. They have had a blast with it. I even play around on itmyself. Fun times.

This is a child's toy, not a musical instrument
Yea, I know, it didn't cost me much money, and I apparently got what I paid for; however, I figured with a title of "Authentic Musical Washboard", that you'd be able to make *some* kind of pleasing musical sounds on it. Oh, how wrong I was.... This thing would look small on a short statured midget! The metal surface on this joke of a product is literally about 7 inches X 12 inches (if that). You're not going to get any kind of resonance on something that tiny. A midget couldn't even wash his/her drawers on something this size should he/she decide to use it to wash their drawers! Obviously, they're not going to be able to make any music on this match box cover, so you may as well wash yer drawers with it. The only song that you'll literally be able to play on this thing is Steve Miller's "Take the Money and Run"! The only musicality you'll get out of this toy is the single note that is sounded as you toss this piece of crap into your aluminum garbage can!

Sounds pretty average.
The name of the product "Musical Washboard" should have set off some warning bells! If you're an amateur looking to have some fun playing washboard, then this is for you. However, I'm not sure if this will cut it in a professional setting. It has a fairly small playing area, and a thin, 'plastic-y' sound. I'm hoping that my sound guy can tweak some knobs and make this sound good through the PA!! Still, for the price I suppose I can't complain.
