It's definitely waterproof and has a decent grip for working in mud. It's really changed gardening for me. I go in the morning often when everything's covered with dew and shoes a sneakers are going to be soaked through to the socks, not to mention the times when we've had heavy rains. These are very effective and I would definitely buy them again. It is a shoe, not something that fits over your shoe. It's really tight to get on and I found it worked better to grip both sides near the heel than to pull it up by the single bootstrap in the back. Once on, ironically, it feels loose but it's really not.
