Great reception on Shortwave and AM with a small piece of wire and an alligator clip
I was somewhat skeptical after reading some of the reviews here on Amazon. I figured if it wasn't to my liking I would return it. After taking it out of the box I cranked the gyro and turned it on. For a small radio it sounded good, don't get me wrong, it's no boom box, but for talk radio and low volume it's fine. AM reception, and shortwave reception is far better than I expected. I used a length of wire and an alligator clip on the end of the antenna and the shortwave comes in great. The solar panel seems to work as described, and so does the crank. The rechargeable batteries that come with it seem to hold a charge well. All and all I think it's worth the money. Cool little backup radio. I would definitely purchase another one. I also tried it in the car with an old cb radio antenna, coax wrapped around the antenna of the Kaito, worked just fine, even in Queens NY Have a great day. Update: it's been 6 months and this little radio is still kicking strong. I definitely recommend this radio

Failed to hold a charge when I needed it the most.
I purchased this radio about a year ago for emergencies. Guess what? We have a weather emergency here in New York with Tropical Storm Henri upon us now. I unpacked the radio last night, and attempted to charge it overnight using the optional AC power adapter, but the unit failed to hold the charge. Go figure!? I then tried the dynamo crank for about 15 minutes and no dice. The radio barely holds a charge and then radio and lights fail.Just when you need to use an emergency device during an emergency and it fails, should say something about the the quality of the product.I'm not sure what the solution is, but wouldn't it be ironic if I had to replace the rechargeable battery pack?? That would be unacceptable.I've requested a full refund and waiting to hear back from Customer Support.

Very Useful Feature Rich Radio
Very nice AM, FM, Shortwave and Weather Band radio ! I originally purchased this to travel with me on auto trips throughout the U.S. but find it very useful at home as well. It is a well made digital radio with excellent sensitivity and sufficient volume. I find the temperature and humidity sensor to also be useful on road trips.

Best Kaito Emergency Radio Model!
In my humble opinion, the Kaito Voyager Pro KA600 was their epitome. I prefer it to the KA600L, because, while the KA600L has a lithium battery with greater battery life, you sacrifice one of the additional power options, being the additional option to use 3 AAA batteries. For an emergency radio with several charging options (dyno crank, solar panel, and A/C adapter), I'm not worried about one of the power source options having a longer life; I would rather have one more level of redundancy. Another option, which the KA600 provides and the other Kaito emergency radios all are lacking, is the LW band! For some reason, Kaito has removed the LW band option in their newer, "flagship" offerings (KA700 and KA900). Finally, yellow. Yes, yellow. This may be superfluous for some, but for me, an emergency radio simply needs to be yellow, because who knows when this high-visibility color may come in handy when looking for the radio in an emergency situation. For some reason, Kaito's newest offering, the KA900, comes only in a dark gray color option. Thus, all things considered, the Voyager Pro KA600, of all of Kaito's high-end line of emergency radios, comes out the clear winner.

Worked great...until it didn't.
It worked great, until the station tuner knob brok off from it's housing. Very flimsy post. Treat it delicately if you want it to last. Very disappointed

A good emergency radio
We purchased the radio for when we go camping or fishing in remote areas. I have only tried it at home so far but I believe it is exactly what we are looking for.
