Lovve this movie
Loved this movie from years ago. I was telling my 92 years young mother about it and she said she had never seen the movie. I got it so when she comes down in two weeks for the winter we can watch it together.

Definitely worth watching--it unfolds slowly but it takes a surprising turn!
I loved this movie! Filmed in the late 1980's, there are many funny references to that time period as well as some funky 80's-style background music. But don't let the background music lead you to think this is lightweight fluff. The story could have happened during any time period, and it made me nostalgic for my own childhood days at the beach. Rocket Gibraltar, at first, seems like a typical family movie about a weekend at the beach. Don't be fooled by its simplicity. The way the film unfolds kind of reminds me of Ravel's 'Bolero' and is something you will not soon forget. Burt Lancaster, in what had to be one of his final roles, was deeply touching, as the patriarch celebrating his birthday. And McCaulay Culkin had to have been younger here than in "Home Alone" and he had such a powerful spirit in this movie. Rounding out the cast are other famous actors at the start of their careers such as Patricia Clarkson, Kevin Spacey, and Bill Pullman, all conveying the same star power that they have invested into all of their subsequent films. The pay-off at the end of this movie had me at once incredulous, exuberant, wistful, thoughtful, and grateful that I got to see Burt Lancaster one last time. Rocket Gibraltar is a great story that places you squarely in the 1980's, while also taking you back to an earlier, sweeter time at the beach. Then, something kind of magnificent happens.
