Cat's Claw: A Calliope Reaper-Jones Novel: 2

Cat's Claw is purr-fect!
I will keep this review short as I do not want to give anything away regarding the plot. This book, for those who don't know, is the sequel to last year's "Death's Daughter" and continues the adventures of Calliope reaper-Jones, the world's most unlikely heroine who, through sheer luck, good friends and guile, manages to get through the many problems that life as death's daughter throws her way."Cat's Claw" is a very good book in it's own right but is not a stand alone novel, in that it really requires people to ahve read "Death's Daughter" and also sets up the third book due next year. The plot is quite tightly packed and full of twists and turns and at it's heart as a very interestingly done time paradox which really works out rather than being a device for the story. Full marks to the author for creating a modern-day mythic tale that uses influences from many different religions and myths and yet breathes into them a new life without disrespecting the source. it's a very delicate balancing act and I think Amber Benson does well here.If I would however make one point that I feel needs made. "Death's Daughter" was touted as a story that was suitable for younger teenagers, and I ahd assumed that "Cat's Claw" would be likewise. However, the amount of sexual content, in both description and innuendo, really doesn't make it suitable for anyone of a younger teen age. Don't get me wrong, the content didn't bother me (I'm an adult) and it is certainly not in any way pornographic in nature) but it is certainly far too racy for say a teenager of 13 or 14. So if you had bought the first book for your young teen and have considered buying the second one for them, I'd check the content out first. But on the whole the book is a success. Amber is confidently striding into her own as an author and I for one cannot wait for the third installment.

Better than her debut novel
This novel follows on from 'Death's Daugher' and continues on the jouneys of Calliope Reaper-Jones.For those not familiar with the first novel, I do not recommend this as a read. The characters have relationships that further develop and without the knowledge of the first book, those relationships have less meaning. The book continues the focus on the change in Calliope's life started when she got involved in her dads business. It starts brightly and continues the pace well in a style that draws you in.This is an enjoyable book that will help you pass the time, immersing yourself in a unique world.

Cat's Cradle
After reading Death's Daughter I decided that I wanted to collect the Calliope Reaper-Jones series and read them in order (it's the first time I've done this). I had high expectations for Cat's Claw and I was not disappointed. Benson's series is quickly becoming a cradle, a safe place where I can escape the real world and read about a character I love and can relate to.

Wonderful
A truly wonderful book from a talented author! The transition from Death's Daughter is perfect; didn't feel like the lovely Ms Benson was trying to squeeze out more juicy story-telling from a dried up concept, which seems to happen so much these days. This book is definitely brilliant! Kept me engrossed on the train for hours! Definitely worth a read (or three!)

The Awesome Amber Benson does it again
Amber Benson has worn many hats in her career, actress, producer, screenwriter, director, hero to gays everywhere and last year she added a new one with her debut solo novel Death's Daughter. The heroine was Calliope Reaper Jones, the Death's Daughter of the title, who was living in New York with a self inflicted forgetting spell so she wouldn't know about her supernatural background. Then her father is kidnapped and Calliope has to save the day. It was possibly one of the best books of 2009, if not the best, and now Amber has returned us to the crazy world of her new heroine. This time Calliope hs to do a favour for Cerberus after adopting one of her puppies in the previous adventure. Now Calliope has to travel between Las Vegas, Purgatory and a cut price department store which may be the most frightening place in the world for anyone devoted to Manolo Blahniks, and along the way she goes through more crazy, dangerous adventures ith her friends at her side. If you're loking for a good old fashioned read then do yourself a favour and buy this book now, and Death's Daughter too if you haven't read it already, you're brain will love you for the rest of your life.
