Q: Do you need a specific crimping tool or will channel locks work?

I believe a special crimping tool could make attaching them quicker but, I do ok with using standard pliers that have a rounded jaw.

Q: Can these aglets be used on ribbon material to make shoe laces?

Qualified yes. If the ribbon material fits inside the aglet (might need to roll it up slightly) and is large enough to get a good crimp, then you can use these on it. How well the result would actually work as a shoelace would depend on how strong the ribbon material is. Q: Can be used on leather laces?

Yes, but I was not satisfied with this product... even with the tool to close the metal it was not neat finish. Money wasted!
