I have been using Magic Root for over 15 years. I have tried others, just to compare, but I always came back to this product. I read some of the negative reviews, and I am not sure if it's because everyone's hair is different or if I use a certain technique that makes it work perfectly for me. I am 58, and have been graying since 25! I use this to extend my color treatments to avoid over processed hair. Here's how I use it: 1. I dry my hair completely. 2. I create parts to target my grays only. 3. I give a very light spray of Amika or Moroccanoil dry shampoo directly into those parts. I feel that this is a good base for which to spray on color and have it last, as well as keep it on my hair and not my scalp, which tends to get oily by day 3! It also creates a nice fragrance for my hair, as the Magic Root does not have any scent. 4. I shake my Magic can for a solid 10 seconds as most liquid products will have various ingredients that settle differently. 5. I learned to hold my hair down to best see the grays, and to spray using brief strokes, holding the can at least 3 to 4 inches away. If I accidentally oversprayed a spot, I merely rub it in with my finger tips and then wash them off with soap and water. That's it! Again, I've been using this product for a very long time so while my technique may sound comprehensive, it takes me approximately 2-3 minutes to part, lite spray dry shampoo, re-part, flattening the area to get targeted coverage, spray on Magic Root, and done! Sometimes, like on hard to see areas, I will lift the hair and spray up into the part. Most important for me, is to use short strokes of spray holding the can a few inches away. A thorough shaking of the can just before spraying is a must if I want an even, well-blended color, while disguising all gray strands. And while this does wash out with Shampoo, it has never gotten on my pillow case or even run onto my face or neck, even if I was sweating. I use the golden brown as I am a dark blond with light blonde highlights. My natural color is/was medium golden brown. I found that going one shade darker than my dark blonde color, enhances my contrast. Also, I have used this to correct erroneous highlights and/or to add darker highlights for a darker look. IMO, it is a great product and part of my routine hair care. I hope this review is helpful!

UPDATE: Since I couldn't return this, I gave it another shot and have upgraded my score from a 1 to a 2 star. After some practice, here's my tips: you need to tilt your head up when applying, otherwise the dye just drips down your scalp and onto your face. I used this product for the parts, but on the part that is closest to my face (at the temples), i used color-wow. End result: my hair looks fabulous. The full coverage of the roots would have taken me 25+ minutes to achieve with color-wow (and maybe not even). it's also not as gross feeling (probably bc I sprayed less on this time). It's a mess at first, but with practice it works extremely well. still a Con: inhaling the spray fumes had my breathing messed up for about an hour (i have asthma). also, if you scratch your head, you have brown die all under your fingernails (but this happens with Color-wow too). Original Review: I bought this item because while I love my usual product (Color Wow), it takes too long. Now that I have more white hair, I wanted a spray to speed things up. This stuff is a disaster! It gets all over your hands and makes a giant mess. It smells bad and made my scalp burn instantly so I had to hop in the shower and wash my hair immediately. It seems to work well on the part - it does a good cover job, but once it dries and you touch it, it feels gross (but does actually cover up the grays very well). It does NOT work well near the temples - it looks ridiculous and it's impossible to fix without starting all over (from hair washing!), which sucks because I put it on after I had already blow dried my hair. Even worse, this item is not refundable, so I just poured $20 down the drain.
